View Full Version : Standard nova mirrors - 'electrified'

In preparation for my nova build I have made electric wing mirrors out of standard nova mirrors + motors from a calibra. Is it worth me doing a write up of this or is it not something that most people would be interested in? P.S. I did find in the Haynes manual a wiring diagram that showed some models did have electric mirrors, GSI's didn't or does anyone know any different?

option only iirc, only worked on one side though. If you've got pics to go with it may be worth putting up a guide.

yes got plenty of pics, approx 4hrs to make + wiring them in (which I haven't done yet)

Yes! Get that guide up. I'd definitely be interested in seeing how you did it :D

It was an option in Scandanavia IIRC. The motors should slot in to the std body.

I know Ian Holmes & Andy Bishop both have them fitted on their Novas.

The plug-and play motors are the ones from the Cavalier

Requirements 2x Nova mirrors (std) + Vauxhall electric mirrors (Calibra ones in my case)

1. Start by dismantling donor and nova mirrors (remove nova mirrors first).
2. Remove plastic backing plate from donor mirrors, be careful due to potential broken glass.
3. Take backing off nova mirrors without breaking glass.

pic showing donor backing plate against nova wing mirror and nova glass removed:

4. Modify passenger side motor only so that it can be installed 90 degrees anticlockwise from it original orientation (this makes it a lot easier to fit). This is done by opening up the motor and swapping the 2 internal motors + wires around. Now horizontal and vertical motors will operate their new respective directions. Next swap the 2 wires around on the horizontal motor only (because in my theory left and right are changed yet up and down remain correct).

pic showing inside of motor (can't remember if this is pre or post modding)

5. Offer up the motors to the internal plastic of the nova mirrors and sketch what is to be cut away for them to mount correctly, also sketch on the 2 mounting holes that are to be used so you don't accidentally cut this part away. Note that the motors need to be as far from the end of the wing mirror as possible, see pic of passanger side + note orientation of motor.

6. Cut and keep filing the plastic away until the motors can be mounted to the larger section of plastic that remains. See pic of drivers side installed:

7. Mount the motors with screws and bolts after drilling through the holes. These two mounting points seem sufficient especially when the wing mirror cover is attached as that helps to hold it firm. You can alternatively make a small bracket to the third mounting point.
8. Cut donor backing plates to shape of nova glass as per pic and then 'snap' onto motors (note passenger side will be 90 degrees orientated and therefore will end up smaller than the drivers side).

9. Attach nova glass on with tiger seal or similar.
10. Rear cover will now fit on (may need some filing to cover and motor), feed wiring through out of mirror.

Well thats it, I havent wired these up yet so havent tried out my passanger motor theory or the direction limits. Hope this write up helps those considering mod.

Hi
Not bad that conversion, but I prefer the one with the Cavalier motors (less cutting, plug-and-play) These are the same motors that were used in the original Opel/Vauxhall electrically Nova mirrors.
Here's a description on how to do that conversion:

Here you see a dissambled Nova mirror (on top) and a Cavalier (Ascona C) one:

Remove the glass of the Cavalier mirror

Remove the screw that attaches the motor
http://www.opel-corsa-a.com/e-Spiegel/e-Spiegel_3.jpg

Remove carefully the adjusting pins on the back of the Cavalier mirror glass

Remove the metal ring in the Nova mirror

Here you see the Nova mirror and the Cavalier motor (easy fitting, no cutting required)
http://www.opel-corsa-a.com/e-Spiegel/e-Spiegel_6.jpg

Plug the motor in, attach it with the screw and put the metal ring in again
http://www.opel-corsa-a.com/e-Spiegel/e-Spiegel_7.jpg

on the Nova mirror glass, attach carefully the 2 pins of the Cavalier mirror
http://www.opel-corsa-a.com/e-Spiegel/e-Spiegel_8.jpg

Finally enlarge this hole to get the cables in

And put the glass back in in the housing, Finished

Cheers
Steve

Thanks for the guide.

Needs re-posting in technical guides & Locking.

just a quick note, im part way through this mod and found my cavalier mirrors had the same motors as the calibra ones

the cav ones in the pics must be very early type ones
