OK, this is really beginning to frustrate me. I have an '89 Nova GTE with what feels like a fuel problem. The symptoms are:
Cuts out during a journey, apparently at randomn, no warning or other symptoms other than a loss of revs and power.
Wont start after cutting out. May start after 30 mins or more of being left alone
When starting the car at the beginning of a journey, if it doesn't fire up properly I can forget trying to start it for half an hour.
Engine turns over fine but wont fire. Sometimes it may 'cough' as if trying to fire, but then gives up.I suspect its the injection pump, but I dont know why it doesnt happen more often if this is the case.

Any help VERY gratefully received - I love my little car but its driving me nuts!!

It could be getting damp? try cleaning the injectors too.Give it a good service will be best.

I am sure its not damp doing it. Its really hot today and the car started fine, ran for four miles and then cut out as I was joining a dual carriageway.

Hi mate, i have had the same problem on my car (f reg GTE) last year, changed untold parts, serviced it, checked wiring etc... and it still was doing it. Made me want to sell it. Then I realised the rotar arm in the dizzy cap had alot of play (changed 4 of them) - each time I put a new one on the car it was fine for a few weeks - then the same. So decided to change the entire Distributor/ cap and rotor arm for a brand new GM one - PROBLEM SOLVED! Been nearly a year now and car is running perfect.

My local Vauxhall dealer quoted me ?308 + VAT for a new complete Distributor / cap + rotor arm. - Sounds ridiculous but that was the price. Luckily found a new GM one on ebay that had been in someones garage for 6 years boxed and sealed for ?27 + delivery (bargain).

Your problem sounds exactly like the problem I had - so hopefully the solution is the same for you as was for me.

Can you hear the pump prime, when you switch the ignition on? could be fuel pump relay.

Hi Tom - Yeah, pump primes fine - first thing I checked.

George - I was thinking the same way. Just ordered a new dizzy cap and rotor arm. I will try these first then will replace whole dizzy if it doesnt crack it. Thank god I have a mate who works for a parts distributor!

My bad day got worse when my mate turned up to recover the car with his towtruck - no car!!! Turns out police had got it towed .

Now going to cost me ?150 plus VAT to get the thing back :tard::mad:. Not chuffed at all!

OK, I seem to be getting somewhere now. New dizzy cap and rotor arm appear to have helped significantly.

Does anyone have part numbers for compatible distributors and ignition coils? I am having a hard time finding new parts....

took it to a local vx specialist and said it would be trial and error, told me to change the fuel pump relay, since then it was fine.
