Has anybody tried this (http://www.cookhaus.co.uk/vinegar/index.htm)? Some of the classic Celica owners swear by it...

Yeah, seen that ages ago and promptly bought a bottle of vinegar, since then I have had no casuse to use it :( Although I did use a bit to wipe my wipers.

We used an acid bath for some parts of the vintage/classic cars we restore, I might give this a go with some random bits of Nova I have kicking about though.

I'd have thought so. Just strip off any rubber bushes and mountings beforehand and all should be dandy.

Just wondering if I can buy enough vinegar to put my entire boot in lol

Coca Cola should also work, given its acid content ;) ... but more expensive than vinegar by about 1000% lol

sooo in theory if you get a long enough container you could bang some vinigar in the container and put the bottom of your door in it overnight then just scrub away the next day then paint?

Aye Vinegar is rank.

Its pretty much good for any purpose though, from cleaning carpets to chasing away vicious dogs & even weight loss!

Once you wash the vinegar off(could use meths spirit or something) i bet that would get rid of smell.

Looks a good method if it actually works as well as in the pics.

I've just had a thought. Vinegar works well because its acidic, right? So remember when you were a kid and they warned you about how pollution caused acid rain? Wonder if we polluted enough the rain would get so acidic you could leave your nova out in a shower to remove all the rust lol

thats what i thought - and probably wont damage any seals (the rubber kind, not the kind that dont go clubbing)

here are a few pics. thought i would give it a quick bash on some small parts first.. :)

enjoy peeps!

the vinegar
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00230.jpg

a tub, wire brush, the thing you clean long glasses with and not pictured a old tooth brush.
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00231.jpg

firstly gonna try it out on the driveshaft nuts here they are before dipping.
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00234.jpg

and also if you look in the middle here its the little clamp for the bonnet cable.
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00235.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00238.jpg

put them in at 11 o clock last night, and took them out this morning at 11 to give them a quick rubbing off with a tooth brush.

heres how they turned out........

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00240.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00241.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f260/plip_plop/rusty%20vinegar%20removal/DSC00242.jpg

well not exactly spot on just yet so i have put them in again for another 12 hours too see if it will help any more.

it brings out any light surface rust really easily and spot on as you can see on parts of the clamp. and dirty thick grime like on the nuts needs a good scrub and hopefully will be fine after another half day of soaking..

enjoy! :thumb:

It is no good for degreasing, not sure if thats been mentioned yet, you need to degrease every thing first
