This unfair bank charges thing that everyone is trying to claim back... what a friggin' hassle!
I work for an accountants - and the boss has had the ingenious idea of offering it as a service to our clients - so they stump up the ?10.00 cheque to the bank to request details of charges, and we do the rest - with a letter of authorisation to act on their behalf.
"It's really easy and not much work involved" he says.
Yeah right. I now need to write a letter to the banks for each of our clients - shouldn't take TOO long... but then what about keeping track of who has been offered what, and when, and what we did then, and when... etc etc.
Ridiculous. There will be HOURS of time invested in this.
erm i assume you take a cut of the recovered charges? if not then you lose money..... your boss is a legend lol.
does he not also realise that bank accounts often get closed after the charges are repaid...
Stop crying.
I'm sure tthere's others in different situations who'd jump at the chance of your job.
lol no one wants andys job... not even andy

Oh yes. You know so much about me, and my job, and you are as such infinately qualified to make sure a comment. Well done. Shut the f*ck up you idiot.
Stu, you're right. he's an idiot. I think this service is being offered free of charge. Which i just find utterly ridiculous. While i am devoting my time to this, there is an ever growing mountain of accounts that i need to prepare for clients - which is what they actually pay us for. Just stupid.
If he were to ask one of the junior staff to do it, i could understand it - we have someone employed here who deals mostly with admin work, why not tell her to do it instead of someone who does accounts?

I got called by a call centre in Newcastle yesterday offering this service for ?39.99.
I declined & said that I was able to do this myself using a well circulated letter available on the net. Apparently its not strictly legally binding though & the bank can refuse.

Wise, if you've any clients trying to claim their charges back off Lloyds TSB they'll struggle!
Some guy took them to court about it and he lost! so i think a new precedent has been set by Lloyds TSB for other banks!
I got mine back with no questions asked from Natwest, but they've altered my credit rating now too, not maany people realise that happens!

If the bank refuse you can take them to court and they then have to PROVE that the charges levied against YOUR account were proportionate to the amount of cost incurred by them.
Proportionate. That's the key. If you bounce a direct debit and they charge you ?35, does it actually cost them that much. The answer is no, in 99.99% of cases it doesn't. Their systems generate a letter notifiying you of the failed payment and automatically charge you at the end of the month or whatever. Costs them about ?2.50 maximum according to industry experts.
They are not allowed to profit from these charges, so have to pay you back the difference.
Speak with the boss and see if you can defer the task to a junior member of staff. Obviously you are better equipped to deal with the accounting work that you are paid to be doing than the junior staff!! When I was teaching at a secondary school, the government would implement new paperwork which would 'help pupils', all it ended up doing was taking our time with the pupils away as we were given a free period or two a week to fill it all out!
I say pile it all on a lackey.
Oh yes. You know so much about me, and my job, and you are as such infinately qualified to make sure a comment. Well done. Shut the f*ck up you idiot.

Or you could stay around here, so as to feel intelectually superior to all who post here, at least in your own head.

Nope. No precedent has been set. Since every case is different, and some people want interest, some people don't etc. It would all depend on exactly what he wrote in his letters, and how he responded to what they had to say. It could be that this person who lost simply was a nightmare to deal with and the bank did incur big costs when dealing with his account. Meetings with the manager to discuss things would be an incurred costs - and if you spend a couple of hours talking to someone who earns ?30 per hour every few months - it soon adds up.
I've been following all this really closely for a while.

If someone of 'authority' on an internet based forum wishes to ban me for having an opinion then that's fair enough.

Fair play. You've got balls :thumb:
I don't assume anything about anyone. I don't know anything about you, and as such wouldn't assume I was in a position to make comments about your job.
Telling a site administrator that they're no longer welcome here because they don't own the right sort of car is a bit foolish to be honest. My contribution to the site has gone far beyond simply owning a vauxhall nova, and has done for a long time.
I don't feel intellectually superior to all who post here. Though i am intellectually superior to quite a lot of them.
As for cheer up... I am in a perfectly happy mood. You should see me when I'm not :D

lol I'm cool...
You're right about Llyods TSB, good job I got in before that new ruling in their favour :)

Your >> You are. What seems to be the problem there?
I favour the "go into a branch, have a quiet word with the manager and offer to close my accounts and go do business with another bank" approach. that gets the odd charge or two back with intrest lol.
prehaps i should sell sand to the arabs :D

yeah they're really helpful. I'm modifying one of their letters to suit my purposes for initial contact. We've had to modify them as we're acting on their behalf, and had to get written authorisation for the bank to deal with us etc.

your > belonging to you
you're > shortened version of you are.

you earn a gazillion pounds per year though Stu, they're less worried about losing Richard Branson as a client lol
your > belonging to you

Well fancy that
if anything, "friend" was spelt wrong, and nobobdy noticed that lol
well yeah but still nice to not need to do the letter thing lol
I did, afterwards but don't wish to be pedantic.
Meh.

Just looked at the letters sent out to clients... no win no fee.
If successful we take 15% share of their refunded charges.
I still don't see that as being very much money though, as most of the bank charges they get are standard business banking charges and not eligible for refunding.

Why does every thread in muppet always have to turn into some bloody p!ss take/rant/or bitch fit???
This's probably one of the more serious threads posted in here, and could probably benefit the majority of the users on here!
As for wise not owning a Nova, get over it! him and Stu are probably the most helpful people that are on here, and no, i aint brown nosing lol just stating a fact!
I was going to try and claim some charges back from Nationwide and Cahoot - they owe me ?100 and ?60 respectively. Dunno if can really be bothered though... having said that it was due to a Nationwide fcuk up and not crediting my account with a deposit as quickly as they should have.

I got mine back with no questions asked from Natwest, but they've altered my credit rating now too, not maany people realise that happens! i totally agree lloyds bank didnt cancel my direct debit as requested or the select account so i had loads of charges come through since trying to get the charges back its now racked up to ?570 spent loads of time on the phone trying to sort it, which they never record. i have now sent about 6 letters to them and they were suppose to get with a setlement........................still waiting:cry:

I used to have an account with them, probably had over ?1000 in charges, but as i closed the account they've sent what i owed (in charges) to a credit company, not sure if i can qualify to get the charges back now though!

Pillar - when you send them a letter, you should state that they have 40 days to comply with your request. 40 days is the legal maximum amount of time they are allowed to take. By specifying this in your letter you show you know what you're talking about and they wont stick you at the back of the pile.

it's not what you've been charged that you can reclaim, it's what you've paid. If they charge you ?3500 and you only pay ?1000, why would they pay you ?2500 you never gave them in the first place lol
Also - if a collection agent was brought in, the cost of that would account for a big chunk of what you claimed was unfair.

and wise, stop whingeing.work is meant to piss you off and make you annoyed, thats why you get paid to do it.if your boss asks you to do something you do it.as one boss said to me in the past 'theres thousands of other people who would love your job,if you dont like it...F.U.C.K O.F.F!!'lol

i dont get paid enough for doing MY JOB let alone the work that should be given to other people. This is a fact. I am at least 2k underpaid. Hence my current job hunting.
ps. Two people in more junior positions to me have just left where i work because the money is **** and the place is going nowhere. Thousands of people DO NOT want to work where i work, on the money i am on, doing the work that i am expected to do. Fact.

not quite 'fact'
more of a blatent lie!
there are thousands of people homeless.
thousands living in poverty.
thousands in war torn countries.
thousands on benefits.
im sure non would turn down the offer of any job, let alone (im guessing here) a nice cushy office job on circa 15k a year.
just remeber when your having a bad day theres millions out there having a worse one!
really does piss me off when people moan about how bad their life is blah blah blah and how there so hard done by. you need to wake up and be gratefull for what youve got,not whinge about what you havnt.
*rant over......now if everyone could give a pound to a child in need lol *
