Id guess rings, stem seals tend to start off by only smoking on startup (due to oil leaking into cylinders overnight).

If its suddenly started happening, its probably the rings unfortunately.

Sounds like stem seals then.
Does it go it under high vacuum(i.e. overrun)

I did say stem seals will smoke on startup at first.

As they get more worn they will begint o let oil in under normal running conditions, so get them changed (its not a hugely bad job TBH)

Be OK for the trip though I should imagine.

I guess you want your mind put at rest? My old 85 B reg 1.2L used to use about a pint of Castrol a week via the stem seals. (good ole days)
