avon are a good tyre imo. ats do a in house tyre which is made by avon and its cheaper. Or KWIK FIT (cough) do a ceat tyre in that size. The ceats are made by pirelli and are highly recommended :)

185 50 14s are only just comfortable on 5.5J cavalier steelies, they are not recommended for the 5J wide SR wheels. Go for 185 55 or 185 60 tyres, they are cheaper and there is a better selection in these sizes. I was impressed with the Avons on my friedns Focus, but that is a heavier car than the Nova. I've been using Kuhmo KU31s on the 1.2 Nova in 185 55 14 and they are a very good wet and dry tyre for the price (?33 a corner).

ZV3 Avons are pretty good & the old ZV1 was a nice tyre too. I think they peel a bit if really abused but then again most tyres do. Better than Yokohamas IMO, which do not suit a Novas handling characteristics.

I love Michelin Exalto's. (if you can afford em)
