Rear lamps are standard Nova spec (one Euro) - orange indicator lense lightly tinted with black tint spray - and then the whole lamp re lacqured clear to get the shine back !!

Quite a simple mod and cheap but looks slightly different :)

thanks guys,
adam, ive just tried to keep everything as tidy and neat as poss, its a tight squeeze but im happy with how everything fits in now

dave, thanks very much for the pics thats a massive help, my new inserts are the same as yours apart from they have 5/8 unf thread, ive just got the parts ordered for it now

matthew172
14-04-12, 10:22 PM
well ive been having some problems with the front suspension just recentley due to one of the decarbon inserts leaking and also not allowing full travel, so i thought oh well ill just get myself a new insert, not just quite as easy as that though was it !!

decarbon no longer make inserts, so i got myself 2 new 270/120 bilstein inserts only to find out the top mount area was completley different to my old decarbon ones in that the part where the top cap sits is a d shape instead of just round and the threads were a 5/8 unf thread instead of my old m12 size so my top mount/cap werent just going to fit straight on to the new inserts hassle free

so anyway after thinking about what the best way to go about it i decided to ditch the 4" dia spring setup in favour of some 2.25" ones as they are more readily available in different lengths and rates and i could buy the top cap and 5/8 unf nut off the shelf to fit my bilstein inserts

so here are the new parts
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/0012.jpg

i bought 2 new lower spring seats too as you can see in the pic but i then found out the pilbeam strut bodies have a unique 2mm thread pitch unlike all the normal ones that have a1.5mm thread pitch so i gave hockly a call and he told me he wasnt aware of anywhere that would have any on the shelf with the correct thread size but he could make me a set as a 1 off at £70 + vat + carriage!!!

so i took my wide platforms to my local fabricator guy to see if there was any way of utilzing them for the 2.25" springs, there was and this is how ive adapted them to work

as they were in std form
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/006-38.jpg

machine up a collar to sit in the centre to provide a flat surface for the spring to sit on like so

Matthew... What can I say! Awesome! Improved an already amazing car!

Not missing my old car, simply wouldnt have the time to do anything to it other than drive it, if I had kept it who knows what I'd have done! Same situation as DIY Dave I reckon.... Sit there for years untouched lol!

Let me know what shows your going to in this beast and I'll try my hardest to come and have a gander!

Great car this

matthew172
15-06-12, 08:29 PM
well its now fully road legal!!
i took it for mot and discovered the quaife box was not going to be any good as the ratios are just too close and not really letting the turbo build boost and pull hard through the gear, was just spending all the time changing gear!
i could have changed the final drive to a higher ratio but as the quaife 1st is long ratio anyway it would have been like setting off in 2nd all the time if id have done that and the in gear ratios would have still been the same anyway.
so i had a look through the vauxhall gearbox info that stuart has in his sig link and found that the f18 has similar in gear ratios and the same 5th ratio to the f28 but a different final drive and in 5spd and as i dont really want to change to a f28 i thought id get a f18, now the f28 has a 3.72 final drive ratio and thats the same as whats in a f20 4x4 gearbox and luckily i aquired a 3.72 cwp from a f20 4x4 gearbox a while back so i went and got a f18 from the scrappy off a cavalier and removed the cluster from it ready to strip all the gears off it and put them onto my 3.72 pinion shaft

cluster out
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/2012-06-07194022.jpg

strip down
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/2012-06-07193532.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/2012-06-07193519.jpg

its so much better now it has longer ratios

got some new greenstuff pads put in too

no your not seeing things iain it is slightly higher at the front but thats how i like it as i think it rides and handles better with a bit more travel tbh, gearbox work is all self taught, you dont learn unless you get stuck in lol

matthew172
16-06-12, 08:19 AM
jim, you can lick it anytime!

novasport, removing cluster is a hell of alot easier than removing th complete box aint it, i made sure i had the mating surfaces oil free and put sealant on it and its fine

crazy_al, i have 280mm discs and wilwood dynalite calipers and they just fit under the wheels

fossit 85, thanks mate

Novasport
16-06-12, 01:43 PM
TBH its only the selector turret and the diff cover plate that is leaking so the cluster can stay in. I fitted everthing dry with new gaskets after making sure the surfaces were spotless. Doesn't help that one of the selector turret bolts has been over tightened in the past so it pulled the threads out when I removed it. Got a helicoil kit on its way to me to repair the thread before I replace both gaskets again.
What sealant did you use?

What model is those wheel bolts off mate?

They are e36 alloy wheel bolts. Same as i use on mine as they are around 7mm longer. You can also use e39 5-series ones too, which look slightly different but are the same dimensions. I get around 8 full turns with no spacers.

Just read all 56 pages in an attempt to answer a question i had about the box. Which i found out the answer to on page 54 lol

Very nice work i have to say.

As some will have seen from my own thread Matt took a ride over to see me the other day. Top weekend for it with the weather being fantastic. I think he only did it to show me it does run and drive! lol It looks as spanking as ever to be quite honest and hell is it loud!! A pic shortly after he arrived.....

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/nj_photo/6000a2e2f08384f23d29bb4cfb5b654b_zpsa2a0c71e.jpg (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/nj_photo/media/6000a2e2f08384f23d29bb4cfb5b654b_zpsa2a0c71e.jpg.h tml)

A little while later we went for a dual carriage way blast..... All I can say is that engine is truly epic!! The shear torque is absolutely unreal!! It makes a normal c20let nova seem quite bland! I was very surprised as I thought a 400bhp nova would be quite undriveable however this proved me wrong. The box ratios seemed perfect and being gentle with the throttle made sure all the power got put down without huge amounts of torque steer or spin. I know you had some tough times building it mate but definitely a job well done. Top marks to the mapper also...... Absolutely epic!!

Cheeky Matt on route home.....

Looks great although I hate to say it but the ride height and wheel colour don't do it for me. It needs a more level hight or maybe slight nose down and I think silver or light anthracite wheel colour! Mainly because the wheels look too dark.

Otherwise an absolute stunner of a car that has always been a favourite of mine so please don't think for one second I'm putting the car down ;)

That looks great!, loved it on the mistral wheels. Things like wheels and ride height are just fine tuning i bet its just nice to be driving it. Would also be cool to give the FMIC a flash of satin black, done that to myne and at a glance it hid the cooler well!.
It was a great feeling when i finally drove myne fully mapped.

ive been getting some parts together recently, going to try some 16" wheels on it so I found these flat spoke mos, should look good once refurbed

and ive been wanting to do away with the cambelt cover and backing plate etc for some time but didn't want to run with no guard at all, swindon infill guards are obsolete too so I couldn't get one of those so whilst trawling the for sale section on another forum I came across this, it was made as part of a batch for a group buy, cnc machined from billet alloy, very happy with it

Liking the wheels - I've got exactly the same spec/offset for my Nova project so I'll be interested to see how it looks, especially the clearance on the front arches when its sat low

Any more info on the cambelt insert - really like that - where was the group buy organised ? Any more available ?

Cheers

matthew172
09-12-13, 09:17 PM
Wiped it off with a rag and some petrol, lets just say theres nothing wrong with jdm mapping, pistons/bores and head are as good as the day it went together

Ano that pal the reason a asked about the piston being that clean was cause if they leak a bit of water in there it cleans them like a steam cleaner.
wat gasket you usen?

Gasket was perfect apart from a small area that had started to leak oil down the front of the block and i cant stand oil leaks so i had to change it, going for a zlet gasket this time stee as they seem to be the most reliable

I wouldn't go with a zlet gasket....... When A6VXL's c20let came apart we found the zlet metal gasket partially fouled some of the heads water ways which obviously isn't good. Saying that though I've read quite a few people having issues with cometic gaskets too of late. Pretty sure Rick and Dale scaife eliminated problems using a hks gasket in the end. No doubt pricey but after the cash you've spent I wouldn't want to cut costs now.

Nick.

Zlet gaskets are the way forward mate, they partially foul the waterways at the front of the head but this isnt known to cause any issues, lots of the big power let guys are on zlet gaskets including nic barnes and he has been on one for 3 years with no issues

Z20LET head gaskets ftw, only £20 from autovaux too (elring), just need to drill the rivets out

I know mine is only an XE but I had no heating issues whatsoever on track with zlet headgasket

What double springs are you on as the Piper double springs foul the oe valve stem seal.

matthew172
28-12-13, 09:46 AM
im on piper springs, I filed the top lip off the oe seals to make them flush and they fit perfect, a local guy who runs a big spec xe in his mk2 escort rally car has run them like this for years and advised me to do the same
