i spoke to my mate mark about my coilovers and he had a chat and then we went to gaz and got these fitted one on the passengers side rear having a bit of trouble with it its hitting the inner arch and then when i went to put my wheel on the tyre hit the spring so ive put a steel whell on at the mogoing to have a good look tomorrow or should i say today

With my rear coilovers fitted i've gotta run a 5mm spacer on the drivers side to clear the spring, but no spacer on the pass side and it clears by a good 2mm, quality Novas !!
If your making up your own brake lines then how come you've bought a brake line kit (4 hoses) ? you should've just ran the hoses your making up direct to the calipers. Also did you order all the fittings (ends) seperatly or did you get them to just send you a set of random fittings ?
Good luck with it anyway.

Rich

tony k
23-06-07, 01:06 AM
nah mate see dars thread i think it was his one just copied his one but im stuck on the rear calipers

R1CH
23-06-07, 01:17 AM
Think you should of sat down and decided were you wanted to route it, that hose for the rear lines seems to be going somewhere random !! i'd of thought that you'd of wanted it pointing down instead of up so you could have it coming thru the bottom of the bulkhead nearer the centre of the car then you could have it running along the exhaust tunnel, then split it in 2 towards the rear of the car.
I've found Banjo type fittings are easier for attatching to the Calipers.

tony k
23-06-07, 01:33 AM
do you know the sizes of them and the bolts aswell cheers fella

R1CH
23-06-07, 01:50 AM
If the way you've routed it connects up ok then i wouldn't worry about it, just looked a bit of a long way round to route it to me, sure it'll work fine tho, Think the rear Calipers are M10 x 1.0 ... or are they 3/8 unf ??? hmm ... not a 100% sure tbh !!

looks a great project mate.....

was that an original nova roll cage?????or 1 made 2 suit????

the reason im saying this is because i modified mine 2 suit the nova(it was originally for an opel kadette coupe) and my mounting points on the rear arch werent that far away from where urs are(mine were maybe a wee bit more to the inside of the arch)

i'd mine all nicely painted n'all..and mounted in with almost flush coach bolts

and what happend ?????.......the buggers were scrubbing on my tyres when cornering..so i had 2 take them out

just something 2 bear inb mind mate.......

mine was lowered 60mm and on 16 inch speedlines

tony k
23-06-07, 11:03 PM
thanks mate yeh it is a omp one but still needed modifying to fit had to chop the front legs down by a inch an half the and the back one side sat flat so my mate had to make a bracket up so it would sit right as for the bolts i put them inwards plus i chopped the down my wheels rub at the back on the inner arch they are 16s comp mo`s dont like spacers so am selling them now to get 15s ive gotta trim the door bars down where they slot in as when i went to put them on the paint chipped off where we put a thick layer on bugger

got some bits done today had to go down my mates at kwik-fit to take the tops off my old struts and put them on the coilovers then when i came back i bumped into my mate which ive been meaning to get hold of as lost his number so he could do some welding for me and by luck he aint that busy at the mo so going round in couple of weeks my engine should be done by then had a bit of bad news my pistons are nackered so more money anyway its a good thing really as can up the boost with no worries heres some pics of my work today after i got caught in the rain (bloody weather)

my old strut dont know the name of these but there really good i think there from japan

tony k

ive just cut the inner skin it only hits about 4 inches up thats the spring i mean then its ok theres no weight in the back really so dont really need to strengthen that much really

A good bash would of sorted the rear inner arch imo, only needs a few mm clearance. The rear shock bodys look pretty long, if thats how the springs are gonna sit then i'd lockwire them to the top spring cap & top of shock body so they attatched to the top instead of falling down on to the lower spring seat, the top spring seat looks like they could fall out from what i've seen with mine.
Manifold looks ok, you've saved yourself a hell of alot of work buying one already done, just in the middle of sorting mine, swapped the lower flange to suit a T3 tho, what turbo you gonna be running, GT28 ? you've gotta move the rad forward & chop the slam panel for clearance as well.
Seems to be coming along.

cheers r1ch gonna get a gt28rs i know about the rad and slam panel only needs abouy 4inch slot cut out whats lockwire are they fitted properly as never done coilovers before was gonna bash it in but im fussy like that i was going to get a t3 but the gt are dual bearing so the turbo down work as hard well it aint met my driving yet just waiting for the engine to come back phoning them tomorrow to see whats going on the i can put it in then weld the f28 mount up and some over bitsthat need doing

were did you get the front bumper from ??

tony k
02-07-07, 08:48 PM
why its just a standard gsi one which i cut the hole out of with me dremmel there the nuts

R1CH
02-07-07, 10:09 PM
whats lockwire are they fitted properly as never done coilovers before

Thay seem to look ok, i drilled a small hole in opposite sides on the top mounts (where the spring seat sits against) then 2 in the spring seat, this meant i was able to tie the spring to the spring seat and the top mount, so when the car was jacked up the spring stayed attatched to the top of the shock and not dropped down and loose like yours is in the pic.
Lockwire is thin stainless steel wire thats used to tie things together !!
I just done mine for piece of mind really.

have you got to trim some off the inner lip for the gearbox to clear
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb221/tonysturbonova/021220063861.jpg

R1CH
31-07-07, 06:34 PM
You don't need to trim anything of the gear box, can't see why your having probs with the rear mount either, mine clears the rack by about 10 - 12 mm.
What front mount are you using ?
When i done mine i just lifted it into position and bolted the front engine mount on, stuck a jack under the front of the gearbox so the engine sat level then jacked the back of the gearbox up so the mount lined up, easier to get it in position first then bolt the mount on.

That rear mount doesn't look like a Nova one for a start as its got the three bolt holes in, Nova one only has two.

tony k

thats the only one i have got in my garage i need a new one anyway as smashed the top of it off

Ernie
01-08-07, 11:13 AM
i thought there was some thing wrong with that mount and a nova only has 2 holes and you need to cut a little bit away to fit the 3 bolt through.

tony k

Whats your oil drain like ? same set up as mine but i aint got the spacer between the Turbo / Manifold, i'd say mines about right but with your Turbo hanging down an extra 2" (?) then theres not gonna be much of an angle for the oil to drain away ... which will lead to a poorly Turbo !!

i aint got a clue about the oil drain thingy aint got that far yet but im new to all this turbo stuff my mate said i needed that adapter flange cos its got a t3 and t25 fitting (as my manifold has got a t25 flange) have you got a picture of your setup so i can check mine out next time im down there

R1CH
04-06-08, 06:38 PM
Not the best pic but should give you an idea, the oil drain on the turbo needs to be above the oil drain in the block to allow the oil to drain away well, mines about 3" above, what size is that adaptor plate ?
Whats wrong with the Turbo ? why does it need a rebuild ?

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y221/ricmetcalf/DSC00047-.jpg

tony k
05-06-08, 11:33 AM
thanks for the pic r1ch i think the plate on my adapter is about 4" i will have to measure it next time i go down there on the turbo side the end float has gone and the blades are scrapping when you spin them by hand and can you spin them turbos round as your boost pipe is at the bottom and mine is at the top if it comes to it i will have to get another plate where did you get your one from by chance and again thanks for the pic

R1CH
05-06-08, 06:39 PM
Aye, sounds like its knackered then !!
I don't have an adapter on mine, i chopped the T2 flange off the manifold and had a T3 flange welded on, so my turbo sits abit higher than yours.
You can rotate both the compressor and turbine housings 360 degrees, just a case of loosening the 6 (8 ?) bolts on the back of the housings and rotating them, with the turbine housing bolted to the manifold your gonne need to rotate the centre housing (bit with the water / oil fittings) so that the oil feed is at the top, the rotate the compressor housing to where you want it to sit.
Once its all bolted up see if you can measure how high the bottom of the oil drain on the turbo (flat section with drain hole & 2x M8 holes) is above the oil drain in the block, just measure vertically down to the centre of the drain on the block.

cheers r1ch i will get another flange welded on had a loo at it on friday and it sits level with the feed from the block oops

R1CH
10-06-08, 07:04 PM
Is it possible to get a picture showing the height difference between them ?
See if you can get a pic so its level with the drain on the turbo, just to give us an idea if it'd work at all.
The oil just drains away under gravity, it doesn't take a huge angle for it to be able to drain away ... so it still could work ??

tony k
11-06-08, 11:31 AM
i will try and get a pic for you mate i should be down my garage on saturday if i aint got a hangover lol

Hi mate, build is looking good! as Rich has said the turbo oil feed return needs to return to the sump by gravity! you may hold up oil in the turbo having it this low. why dont cut the T3 flange end away from the adaptor and weld it directly onto the manifold turbo flange? that way it will bring the turbo back up to a nice level? or do it proper and grind off the old turbo flange and weld a t3 fitment one in its place!:D

another little update after a few pints down the pub on friday me and a few mates was gonna go round my garage and hopefully get the painting done underneath the car with some hammerite but as we was in the pub one thing led to another then we went back to my mates for a party which ended up getting a bit out of hand till a realized it was 7am and decided to go home and get some sleep so the garage was out of the question so i stayed inbed and thought i would go down there sunday with a better head and vision
plus i would be on my own so i would mostprobably get something done lol

first off was getting the under neath sanded down and wiped over with some thinners

17-06-08, 06:33 PM
Difficult to tell off those pics really !!
You still need to rotate the centre housing around so the oil drain is at the bottom.
Easier way to check if its gonna be ok ... see if you can get a straight peice of hose / pipe to fit on the end of the oil drain in the block so its sticking out at 90 degrees to the block (basically just extending the fitting thats already in the block) and comes out further than the turbo, that way once you've got the oil drain on the turbo at the bottom you can just measure the vertical distance between the oil drain on the turbo (try and measure from the actual centre housing on the turbo) and the centre of the hose thats extended from the block.
Hope that made sense !!

tony k

thats the best pic i could get r1ch i think its too low so im gonna get a flange welded on to the manifold just to save all the hassle plus my mate said that the bend on the exhaust might be too low with it being like that

R1CH
22-06-08, 09:39 PM
I reckon that the oil drain will be fine like that mate, appears to be about 1 1/2" difference in height so should drain away fine.
The exhaust it pretty tight where it comes down in front of the gearbox / block but should be able to sort without to many probs, what size downpipe you making 3" ?
I ued a Mongoose 2wd Cossie downpipe on mine, just chopped and rewelded it, just needed to add an extra 90* bend to bring it around the sump.

tony k
22-06-08, 10:14 PM

Hmm, that bottom pully sits out wayyy more than the standard one for some reason.
Is the crank sprocket all the way onto the crank?

tony k
12-08-08, 09:25 PM
yeah it should be when the shop rebuilt it or does it got the other way round the pulley

Adam
12-08-08, 09:27 PM
Possibly.
Should definently sit tight in to the cambelt cover than yours does.

tony k
12-08-08, 09:37 PM
i was thinking that might try swapping it around see if it sits any better, but the only thing is the bolts will be sticking out

well another little update.didnt do alot again this weekend after a two day bender it was my mates stag do. which got a little bit out of hand as they do lol, well i thought i would go down the garage today as got bored of laying in bed felling sorry for myself. plus had enough of the other half moaning so i couldnt take no more and went down to the garage, after pulling the car out of the garage. i just couldnt get in to gear so i looked around abit and after about 20 minutes.i got the juack out and thought i would do the crank pulley. as silly me put it the wrong way round cheers dan16vfor telling me,also i bought some grommets so i put them to some use .aint got alot of pics of what ive done put something is better than nothing also i have just bought a new t3 hybrid turbo. should be deliverd on tuesday or wednesday and my manifold is with my mate to get the new t3 flange welded on

put them on my braided lines just to tidy it up abit and stop them rubbing on the metal

the inlet manifold is only held on with two bolts at the mo, i was gonna either cut the hole thing off or cut it at an angle. so the cable should go away from it i hope

right went down the garage yesterday just to get away from the other half.as she was on the warparth, so i sneeked out down the garage as you do lol.so i thought i would continue on cleaning the underside due to all the oil and rubbish from the roads it has gatherd over the years.so got bored of doin that so i looked at me petrol pumps and swirl pot and thought i would. see where i could put them. i was gonna run the pumps under neath then the swirl pot to one side.but thought i want it all in side i still wanna keep my spare wheel but i cant figure out where to mount them all. plus im stuck on what pipes to get plus how you plumb the lot up as my brain was just blank has anyone got any ideas on where, what pipes i need and the main thing is how to plumb it all up i took couple of pics but thats all i could think of
