Right, following some 8000 rpm loving and a rather large implosion, the small 1.6 has finally given in to my right foot.

I began work on Saturday, removing the rather sorry looking engine and inspecting the damage and removing bits that I have sold or am keeping for the next incarnation.

As you can see, the block could do with some TLC...

Head off (totally undamaged!)

Rear of the block...

More close ups..

Looks as if a bolt had let go... there was no rod/bolts left anywhere.. just this, sat happily in its chamber..

Almost done...

So now it remains to build up the new 20XE with some rather nice internal touches and get it back on its wheels! That piffling 1600 only managed 2000 miles since a total rebuild... I just didnt get on with the small block!lol

slap a bit of chemical metal in there, it will be fine.

It was Dec Burke's old engine which was rebuilt to essentially a SBD 180 spec.

I was thinking about welding the hole up and runing a 3 cylinder...:)

Ahh... that'll be me then :thumb:

I bought that lump from Just Nova's from a low mileage (i think about 26k) Smashed Corsa GSI, before I fitted the TB's I done a full engine rebuild myself, new rings, big end and main shells, ARP's, oilseals etc etc... the engine was immaculate inside  The engine map was supplied by SBD and was originally mapped for Neik Hoogendoom (old schoolers will know him) and it ran like a watch.

Although I never had ANY problems, Ian (who bought the car) said it let go on a track day, I think the Crank snapped?

Did it have the cams fitted / pocketed pistons to bring it up to 180 spec, must have gone well, shame it's dead now

Ta,
Dec Burke.

And I think that Corsa GSi you speak of was my old one that I sold to some lad in Luton who managed to hit a kerb and totally ruin his evening.

Dec, I bought it is its 160 (ish) guise from a bloke Oop North.....

I ran it for a few months until a screw found its way down one of the TBs, following an SBD remap!

After the self tapper had finished muching some valves and a piston, it was totally rebuilt with new rods/pistons (pocketed) and all the cams etc...

Then it lasted a massive 2000 miles before this happened... hence why I am leaving the small block fold at least for now! We dont seem to get on!:)

I thought it was you, hence why I mentioned it!:thumb:

Failure of the rod looks odd. Is that a result of bolt failure?

That looks nasty!!
Once you've tryed a big block engine you will be in a better position to say which one you prefer. Just remember to setup the suspension nicley as well:thumb:

Agreed, rather than others saying small blocks rule without actually trying them.

Cheers all, I am going XE purely on seeing Dar at CC a few weeks back, so if its crap I wanna refund!lol

The shell was built for a 2L anyway, so I just need to get some beefy springs for the coilovers and fit some of the rose-jointed jiggery pokery I have in the garage and all should be well!

Oh yeah and I need a diff... Oi Chris?! ;)
