Today i finally dragged my nova out of the weeds in readiness for a bit of track day fun sometime soon.

I cant believe that its been about 2 years since I last drove it in anger:cry:

Anyways on todays list was:

1. Find the car - under about 2 foot of corn dust at the back my shed!
2. Clear a path through the workshop which included moving 1 BMW M5 (small fry its got to go lol) 1 JD ride on mower ( being tuned for extra mowing performance by my old man - dont' ask) 1 set of gates and finally sweep up about 2 tonnes of crap.
3. Eject the semi -permanent resident of my vehicle lift -ie Jims car

Lunch time:eek:

4. Wash my car and get on ramps
5. All wheels off - complete set of new Dunlop slicks needed  old ones blistered or through to the canvas. Will be taking them over to Whittlebury garage near Silverstone who are my nearest supplier and i'm gonna try and get them filled with Nitrogen this time if poss. Hoping to sort a softer compound on the rear and a harder one on the front to compensate for the the problem of not getting the rears warm enough to match the fronts.
6. Front brakes off - new tarox 6 pot brake kit is going when it arrives( I'm still refusing to remove the Wilwood 2 pots off the rear even though i spent the last 2 track days locking uplol you can lead a horse to water but... ) http://www.247ppd.com/product~ProdID~799886.htm
7. Gearbox out- needs an oil change cos the 1st/2nd gear synchro went again in my straight cut cluster so the gear oil is full of bronze swarf. New thrust release bearing is to be installed and clutch pack checked

7.30pm teatime and a good days work!

To do:
Might do a bit of stitch welding in the cabin - after having done Dan's I regretted not doing mine- we'll see

ABOUT BLOODY TIME lol lol lol looking forward to meeting up again which i have a sneaky feeling will be in a track environment if we can wangle it to get everyone to book the same one as i have said on the phone :thumb:

(and you know the stitch weld is a good move ;) )

p.s.

I love the non defeatest attitude towards the rear brakes "they keep locking up, sod it we'll just put even bigger ones to the front" :thumb:

I hate bearings. and lately im starting to hate gearbox oil! lol!
Hes keeping the rear calipers as im thinking he's wanting to take up drifting?

(i have some spare blue centre caps for compomotives if there any use to ya)

Well everything else fitted to the car was bodged/mangled/adapted so it bloody well did fit and work so its become a challenge now lol plus it took me absolutely ages to sort the rear disc conversion so I'm reluctant to give in without a fight.
BTW you got PM;)

whats going on with the rose joint at the hub end of the wishbone? how does the tie bar attach? be intresting to see more pics, and a spec list. always wanted to see more of this machine, heard bits and pieces about it.

interesting to see 1.4 16v pistons in a SR block, i was wanting to do the same on a 1.6 (8v block - 16v pistons) What did it do to the C/R, if again thing?

Stuart
14-05-07, 03:26 PM
might actually decrease it a tiny bit due to the valve cutouts..... youd have to measure the CR etc really, but thats for a different thread

last time I saw this car was at Donington July 2005, and what a day it was (apart from me destroying 5th gear).

Last time I saw Charlie was when I was chasing him round a go-kart track covered in ICE.

A few more pics.

For those interested in the TCA's you can see that I cut a standard one down added in strengthening plates and attached a heavy duty rose joint off a crop sprayer:D . The whole lot is bolted to the chassis as per normal but using a trackplate bolt off a caterpillar crawler (very tough). Its ridiculous overkill i know but I had em kicking about for nowt so why not.
I've retained the standard tie bar but use a lowered rose jointed tie bar bracket. I've managed to shunt the hub forward a bit to give more caster but not as much as i hoped since the alignment from the tca thru to the tie bar joint gets out and causes binding of the suspension at the extreme range up or down. I've used a standard aluminium adjustable top mount as well to try and get more to varying degrees of success.

Other pics show variously my half a fuel tank effort which works quite well as a means to carry less fuel without surge problems.
My rear brakes effort which are much too effective:roll: :tard:

Its all looking a bit tatty now since its had a bit of a beating over its short but sweet life. It is only ever driven flat out which tends to take its toll.

ah, i see now - it's R/J'd both ends, from the first photo i thought it was just the hub end and couldn't see the tie bar.

One final thing- the cabin shows the DTA management box with the ECB data logger box strapped on top.

Some of you may be interested in how we set the engine up using the management system. We did most of the mapping ourselves by trial and error after having a limited set up done on a RR by the engine builder which we later discovered was running way lean and detonating through quite a lot of the rev range to the extent it burnt a hole through the gasket between 2 cylinders:eek:

To map we basically looked at the lambda readings which are stored for the last 3 mins the engine is running downloaded to laptop. We then looked at the map for peaks and troughs to see if we could iron the most extreme bits out ( after having looked at maps for other similar engines supplied by DTA- there are certain characteristics that need to be included for peak performance). We knew that optimum air fuel ratio under full power is around 12.5-13 and this would translate to a lambda reading of a bit over 800. To alter any fuel cell at any given point in the rev range or throttle position is just a case of increasing or decreasing the time the fuel injectors are open. Therefore at throttle position 1 at 750 rpm the injector might be open for say 4 milliseconds. At TP 14 (max)and 7500rpm the injectors might be open for 12 milliseconds to give optimum AF ratio. Other parts of the map would be leaned right off for obvious reasons so that TP 1 at 7500 rpm ie off flat out for braking would have the injectors open for only 1 millisecond.

Once this was done we would head out for an assessment down the same piece of road to work on flat spots etc and where they occured. Next we would head back by doing a full throttle power run in 4th from low revs to flat out before immediately killing the engine and coasting back into the yard to preserve the important data from the full run.

We did this loads of times and gradually by trial and error slowly ironed out the problems. As the engine bedded in we created a number of maps which allowed us to find the sweet spots. Finally we used all the data to average and smooth out all the non full power parts to make the car driveable in all conditions.

As well as the basic fuel map we were able to alter the throttle pump effect as well so we got immediate response without getting too rich for too long. We didn't find that we needed to alter the ignition map which was fine from the word go.
The DTA stuff is pretty easy to use and we managed without any special training to get it to work quite well.

It gets a bit addictive since you are always feeling there is a little tweak here and there to be gained. On long journeys back from a track day we have been known to break the boredom by doing a spot of mapping down the motorways!
Tends to piss everyone off going from 40 to 120 and then back to 40 again lol
