I say go for it, unless the car's special (if it's a Sport for example)

I've got one... originally bought it for my Cav GSi Turbo then transferred it onto my Astra GSi Turbo and it's now on my Vectra GSi. I wasn't going to put it on the Vectra as it's more of a car specific plate than personal to me but my mate who bought the Astra from me said he didn't want it as he didn't want people thinking he was driving my car lol. Personally I think it's a nice touch and if you ever take it off the car will most probably get it's original number back (both the Cav and the Astra did in my case).

If you want it and you've got the cash do it... just make sure you check www.dvla-som.co.uk as it'll be cheaper there than anywhere else.

i got mine as a birthday present

my view (which will probably upset some people) is it's fine if it's your name/ nickname but think it's a bit sad if you buy one specificly for a car,
i admit when i was younger i was looking at ones that spelt out 'nova' but soon saw that a ?300+ plate would be pointless as it probably wouldn't add any value to the car an if you took it off to sell the car you'd be stuck with it i left it well alone

I prefer plates which are specific to the car, or the spec of the car, regardless of any additional value added (like R34 GTR....). Ones which say for example B19 DAN are fairly common and i don't find particularly innovative, also, I'd hope I could live up to the 'Big' part of the numberplate.......

One thing anyone should steer clear of is plates which only say something
after applying a little imagination and artistic licence, it might also land you in hot water with the fuzz if you have about 5 screws to hold the plate in place which has dubiously spaced letters and fonts to read the desired message. It just looks like you couldn't afford the proper plate.

As above, what ever you go for, buy it off the DVLA as its cheaper than everyone else

I got mine for my 21st, almost 4 years ago. don't have a middle name, so L14M NP - Liam Nissan Primera - was found, sorta stuck with me now and I guess I'll always keep it. It wouldn't feel like my car without it now lol. probs 'cos I always use it for screen names etc. Good investment as there are only a couple legible 'Liam' plates left now, and the ones that are, are a shed load more than I paid :D

I really want 82 LW or LW 82 but funk that lol

Ive had D17 LMR for ages (my birthday and initials). I think its only worth forking out if you plan on keeping the plate for life. Plates matched to a specific car dont really have that same 'cherished' feel. The amount of times you see things like Range Rovers with V6 BMW numberplates is laughable!

I'd have to agree with dannyb, I prefer a number plate specifically for the car type. I think personal name ones are a little chavvy. Especially down here.
Dad tried to get something flashy for his jag, and it would have cost him something like ?4,000...which is more then he paid for the car! lol

I think personalised plates look crap tbh, car specific ones aren't too bad. So long as they make sense and aren't stupidly arranged or letters misrepresented, as that looks exceptionally naff lol

was sat behind a new jag at the lights the other day, he had full stops and half the letters were backwards, couldnt make out what it said, that cant be legal!

I dont know what all the laws are about them but thats what it was, no spaces in it just TU5C4N centered on the plate! Whether it was the actual cars number plate or somthing hes put on for speed cameras i dont know lol

It may have been TU5CAN i was a few months ago i saw it.

IMO personalised number plates are gay.

I view number plates as part of a cars identity.
Ok so a couple are funny but the majority are so obscure you can't even understand what they're trying to say.

I pondered replacing the personalised plate on the vx with something relavant to me etc, but just got the std plate back from the DVLA instead. Its a rarity to have a vx with a normal plate.

plus on a flukey note the astra has X398 and the vx one came back as X298 which looks quite funky with them both on the drive with semi consecutive plates :D

im glad i got myne! just had some spare cash realy and nothing to spend it on, so went on the dvla web site! its still not assigned to the car as you need tax (i think) to assign it! as my car has been off the road for about 3-4years i have to pay ?25 a year to keep it DOH!

DVLA site is the only up to date one mate, if you think about it, they issue the plates. So if they say it isn't available then take it as gospel.

Also cheaper as Stuart says because there is no middle man.

Personal reg's are kool I'd say

I like my original reg (K245 TCS) but the one I'd go for if I could get it would be:

OIT 4016 (OI T40 1.6)
