Maybe this should be in 'mechanical' but it aint about Nova's, just a funny expensive tale :thumb:

My mate has a Primera GT that we converted to GTi-R (nothing new there...) he's been running a VET cylinder head (from an s14a) uprated rod bolts, nismo iirc and nismo oil pump, rolling bearing turbo a FMIC and last time I checked a sesnsible amount of boost.

Anyway he had it off the clock (150mph) said the needle was where 160 would be, it does do 160-165, varified by GPS...

Oil temp was running at 110* then shot up to 130* and all of a sudden he got a nasty whirring noise, dipped clutch and the engine stalled, so pulled up called AA.

He got it home and we dropepd the sumps, removed the bearing end caps and shells and crankshaft and this is wha we found:

It has spun 4 'rod bearings, egged the crank journals. and spread the shell's like crazy. never seen that before.

Now, I left before he measured the 'rod bolts, but do you think they have stretched/failed due to the high RPM? He should not have been doing those speeds on the public roads I know, but surely uprated rods should be able to deal with it? Car runs approx 270 bhp

Confused :thumb:

sounds like hes cooked the bearings due to the high rpm!

lol Only gets a 9/10 for effort though, should have put a stray 'rod through the block

I'll get some pics the bearings look like they've been steam rollered!

Always happens in the SR20DET.

Expensive engines to run. I know.... Ha.

When I ran a DET it spun a big end bearing but that was down to the pick up strainer packing in, never really heard of it on 'rod bearings TBH

Someone been breaking 14a's Bex? lol

im liking the sound of the car !! and yeah, extra points for rods exiting blocks - ive done 2 up to now

novabex

I have heard of it a couple of times. Ours never actually broke too bad.

SR20DET's have never been the best designed engines in the world... Specially in the GTiR. Top mounted intercooler... WTF? Heat rises! Durh!

L14MNP
09-05-07, 02:44 PM
Yeah car's OK bit chavved up TBH :S He had a P10 series (mk1) Primera beforehand that he GTi-R'd and then made 4WD, nutter. That was quick!
What makes me LOL is the fact that he's just sold a GTi-R Pulsar and now has nothing, when he would go onto me about having two quick cars lol

We know a lad who runs SR20DE's and constantly blows up 'boxes and punches holes in the block - but he's a knob end ha ha

My best so far has been fusing no.2 con rod to the crankshaft :D

LOL that's why the cool kids rock the FMIC

SR20VET is where it's at or SR16/20VE - I NEED one lol

All previosu problems, oil pump, chain tensioner, cam spray bars have been eradicated :thumb:

Loads of cars use TMICs, not just Jap ones (iirc Pug 306 durbo has a TMIC) - they're cheaper than FMICs and CCs and tbh its not as daft a place to put it, so long as the car has a bonnet scoop which can channel air down onto it quite well. Flat bonnet and TMIC is ghey though.

I'd even go so far as to say the TMIC is the best place to put the cooler on a standard car, from the manufacturer's point of view...!

I do fancy a FMIC on my GT4 though, mainly as the bumper has a big hole for it...

If it's an Evo Integrale I agree!

I've killed loads of P10 eGT's for their hearts over the years lol

Pretty quick out of the box, must be down to the 14" oem rims! Yeah I've seen a pic of your mates 300, v tidy. What's it running?

I prefer R33s, although its a close call on the looks :D

Its fairly std at the mo, after a rebuild. approx 280bhp. Its having a susp rebuild, leather retrim & then some more power.

I went to a rolling rd meet with the Zed guys & a load from the Supra club on Saturday. highest power was a Zed running at 419bhp, belonged to the guy that built my mates engine.

^^ thats the only liner id own!

anyhoooo as for the topic start :p
If he had fitted ARP's (or whatever mental jap equiv there is) then they shouldnt have stretched and definately wont have snapped to make a religious block. Id guess the oil pump/pickup failed and started the bottom end of oil and picked up all 4 bearings. That or the oil routes have bizar ways and filled the top end with oil leaving nothing for the bottom end.

L14MNP
09-05-07, 03:54 PM
Sounds more like as you say, pick up strainer / oil pump failure mate. Funny because he modified the pickup strainer, making the 'mouth' bigger so as to prevent B/E failure - yeah that worked! =P

Also took out one of the piston squirters too with his demolition ha ha

craig green
09-05-07, 04:02 PM
Its easier to suck through a straw than a drain pipe.....

would the oil pump have failed to draw on it if the stainer was too big?

L14MNP
09-05-07, 04:04 PM
Not sure, because iirc he done a pikey mod on his pick up strainer so he didn't have to buy the uprated one.

Expensive oversight maybe!

quite like that never seen a white one bfore. my brothers got a tt but the engines currently scatterd around the garage floor. its a beast, it pulls like a m0th3r fuk3r. you ever worked on one pmsl, its no nova put it that way.

anyway back to the thread, it sounds like its over reved and lost oil pressure across the bottom end. i would advise a oil pressure gauge, there just handy for a referance mite be worth thinking about running a higher pressure.

Stuart

pressure is nothing without good flow
