View Full Version : Who speaks German...
...there's a part on german ebay and I would like to ask the seller if they are willing to ship to the UK. Anyone wanna offer me a translation service? lol
And before you ask, yes I know I could use babelfish or suchlike, but whilst I don't mind using them for the odd word to search for items, I'm never liking translating a full phrase or question. Knowing my luck it'd probably translate in true German as "your mother sucks elephants and i would like to set fire to your genitals"
...incidentally, this translates to "Ihre Mutter saugt Elefanten und ich m?chte Feuer auf Ihre Genitals legen" according to Babelfish.

:D I went to a good school;)
This morning I seem to be getting lots of emails from Germans. The title of one is "Wie es die Deutschen mit der Preisbindung halten." Which I guess translates to "Where is the German guy with the stopped Preisbindung". All the German I learned from school is just flooding backlol

would you send to england?
W?rdest du nach England senden?
Translated english to german on google, and german to english on babelfish to double check it for accuracy.
If you keep it simple, it gets it right and doesnt try to do to much with grammar.
Its been a while but this shoudl do:
Enshculdigen Sie bitte, aber mein deutsch is nicht so gut. Ich mochte (insert part name here) von Ebay Gekauft. Konnen Sie (insert part name here) zum England Senden?
Danke schon
RJ
That looks handy, ta :D
Duick, I was going to PM you to ask if you spoke German lol
btw, I did French at school for three years, and all I can remember is "parlez vous une pomme du terre?" which I believe translates as "do you speak potato?" Shows how good our language lessons are over here lol

i did 5 years of spanish - wasn't much good at it but can get by ordering food in restaurants, drinks in bars and that sorta thing ... asking for directions also.
I should have been great at spanish - my mums best mate at the time was from Chile - and had two kids (5 and 2) who spoke fluent english and spanish - the two year old though didnt actually realise when she switched from one language to another lol She always offered to help me, but i never took her up on it. Stupid.
I'd love to learn Spanish, managed to grasp a couple of phrases a few years back, but never really continued with it.
I acquired a "teach yourself spanish" type CD-ROM as well, but got put off when an American girl on my MSN (who, it turned out, spoke fluent Spanish) told me the phrases I'd learnt were wrong... so that kinda undermined my confidence in the CD!

lol Jack what were the phrases you thought you had learned?
Matt is right. If you speak a fluent european language you can get a standard call centre job that would pay ?6 per hour, but speaking greek, spanish, french etc etc instead of english will earn you ?25 per hour... doing the same job, but speaking a different language - but you have to be fluent.
I've thought about learning welsh - the wife is welsh - but just dont have the time - and since i know that the welsh language is already useless, and wont exist in 10 years what's the point lol
lol Jack what were the phrases you thought you had learned?
Como es usted which I'd learnt as "how are you", but was told you could say como estas... no etiendo, usted hablas ingles... I'm sure there were a few others, I did write a load down and learn them, but I can't think of them now. Obviously didn't learn them that well, although in the meantime I have learnt Unix which is like a foreign language lol
Excuse the probably very incorrect spanish spelling!
i speak welsh very well, its just as confusing as german lol i can read german & spanish very well, just not write it haha

the way you have learned them isn't really wrong - its just not the easy way to say them.
instead of "how are you" translating to the spanish words for how are you, they have their own way of saying it... "como estas". quicker.
you speak english? instead of "usted habla ingles" you just need "habla ingles?" and raise the end of it as you say it to make it a question.
spanish has a difference set of rules to english with regards grammar - and has 30 letters in the alphabet lol

feck me sounds like japanese! 3 different alphabets for the 3 different "styles" if you will of speaking it!
we use the words "A" and "To" whereas & IIRC they dont use these at all, its asif they dont exist (you can tell im presently learning Jap lol)

it makes some of their oddball words easier to say if you know how those oddball characters are supposed to be different from the normal letter.
l & ll for example are el-lay and el-lee-ay lol

Everybody in the world can speak some english, they just choose not to.
Me & the missus went to brittanny on our honeymoon & she has a bit of an american accent (her dad is one). I went into a chemists shop to try & get something with no success in either french (basic schoolboy) or english (also basic schoolboy). she walked in & they suddenly knew english & sold her the stuff.
Ive always thought german involved describing things rather than giving them a name.
eg instead of 'train', you would say 'Biggun longun huffen puffen runon railun'
Correct me if im wrong.....
Your wrong. But close.
Train in German is 'Longen huffen chuffen choochoo'
French:- Je t'adore
English:- Shut the door
