hi all was just wondering what a good averge priced track tyre would be?

dont want to spend a massive amount of money on some just yet as there just to get me goin for a month or two. i dont want to end up in the nearest tyre wall/ditch either! lol

oh and they have to be road legal too. opinoins please? :)

Dan uses Goodyear Eagle F1's as his wet tyres if I remember correctly.

I use F1's on the road and they cost me ?52 each inc fitting for 14" ones.

I would also be interested to see what prices people can get trackday tyres for and any good contacts you have. I am aiming to get some 14" A048rs before the end of the month.

Id recomend NOT going with 14" wheels for track, mainly because its not a common road legal slick size, therefore the money you pay per tyre would get you a far far far better one in a 15" or 13" size (depending on your brake size)

the T888's are good and lots of VX drivers use them too, same with the A048's

Dan (and i to an extend in his car) tried the Kuhmo road legal track tyre Ecsta V70A, they are great tyres and wear well. but once you get them near the end of their life the wall goes goey... no biggie really.

Im looking at getting a set of Hankook Rs-2's as they are reported to be V good + not mega expensive.

Best bet is to look on the camskill site at the tyres they do for motorsport/track days.

AVOID Colway and Maxsport tyres like the plauge lol. they are remoulds and nasty.

oh and for the record, F1's rule... but dont get the GSD3's they are toilet compared to the 2's

I used a set of R888's at Brands Hatch for the first time and I was very impressed, outright grip was excellent, the side walls felt plenty stiff enough and when they broke away it was nice and progressive. They wore quite quickly, but I still have tread left and could probably have increased their life by adjusting tyre pressures. Plus they are fairly cheap for track tyres, IIRC I paid approx ?65 per tyre from www.tyretraders.com (http://www.tyretraders.com)

Toyo R888's from tyretraders are currently ?74.37 each fro 195/50 15's

Stuart

yeah apparently the 888's want to be run at about 5psi lower than a normal road tyre. anything above 28psi and your going to get odd wear and grip so ive been told

For those running Toyo R888's (http://www.toyo.com.au/Pit%20Lane.htm)
Well to be honest its damn good information anyway.
I use Toyo R888's they are half the price of the Yoko A048's and give the same ammount of grip 'apparently'. However they do not last as long.

they would be the hankook rs2's? do you use them on the road etc?

Ernie

na not road legal nore is the car.
To be honest i dont think they would last long on the road but on track they are unbelivable.
If you going for a set of track tyres to take there on a spare set of wheels i cant rate them enough.

hmm do i bother saying it a third time..... camskill lol

for the hankooks it was about ?293 from mytyres and ?280 from camskill in the two sizes i needed.... for 15" rims they are damn fine value from what i can make out lol

lol yes i wasnt looking hard enough on there website! :tard:

well, the hankooks rs2's are 59 quid on special offer but thats only in the 205 width where as the tyres on my alloys are 195, will they fit?

and the kumhos are 110 quid a piece :tard: so might leave them for now.

Geth

It depends on the width of the wheels. 205 should fit on a 6J but I wouldn't fit them on anything slimmer. Of course you would haver to consider whether they will clear your arches too.

I've been using Dunlop SP Gp N radial 185/580 R15 A8 dry slicks - good but at well over 100 notes a pop they are not very cost effective but then nothing that works any sense is and will probably only last 1 or 2 full track days anyway. Slicks are a problem under Nova arches - they have a much sharper shoulder than road tyres so scrubbage is likely

Scubbed tyres- the Toyo Challenge saloon car series - their times on circuits we've been on with similar performing cars look like the scrubbed road toyo's work really well and they reckon they can last pretty well too. There are firms that will scrub tyres down for you but I'm not sure if they are prepared to do it to 2ndhand tyres:confused:

Whatever you do dont go on track with new road tyres in the dry - the heavy tread pattern makes them in effect wets and you will absolutely kill them plus they will overheat and stop gripping.

IMO money spent on getting the best tyres possible is the best value for money performance mod you can do. A standard GTE with decent suspension and the right slicks would rinse many a faster car on most tracks

AVOID Colway and Maxsport tyres like the plauge lol. they are remoulds and nasty.

As Stuart put above.
Anybody actually tried them or is this an assumption because they are a re-mold?
I would have thought due to the tread pattern (or lack of) and the soft compound they would be ideal for the price and grip better than any 'normal' road tyre.

Cheers

Martin

depends on your terms of value...... if for example you can get 3 -4 trackdays out of a set of "expensive" tyres compared to 1 day from cheap tyres that cost more than 1/4 of the cost of the expensive ones then they work out less good..... in theory.

MARTIN KELSON

So they are rubbish only due to ware rate.
I've tried to fit AO48's in the past and Yoko say there a 195x50x15 is total lie. There a 203x50x15 and the issue with Nova rear arches they were not goint to fit in a million years.
The Maxsport being a 185x55x15 i thought was worth a look at in terms of price and they cant be any worse than my Yoko AVS around Donnington Park.
Might try them for myself as i'am curious to see what there really like.

Cheers

Is there any problems with using full slicks on normal trackdays ?

I'm hoping not !

Stuart
08-05-07, 02:19 PM
Martin, its always worth trying.... you might like them etc....

most slicks are "wider" than claimed due to the way the shoulders dont go in like normal road tyres.

Dar

I'm hoping not !

It depends on the circuit. Deffo worth a phone call. Castle Combe don't want you running them. But Llandow and Donnington Park are ok from what i've seen.

MARTIN KELSON

Not normally a problem i believe in running slicks.
There were Westfields etc on slicks when i was at Donnington.

Just gotta get the slicked car there or a spare set of wheels.
Nice to just arrive and drive and not have to worry about trailers and spare wheels and tyres in the back of your show car!!

On my car at the moment I have eagle f1's all round - (195 x 45 x 15) there perfect for me on the road. I was wondering what profile tyre is best suited for trackay use? Im thinking of getting some trackday tyres (probably toyo 888's) but wasnt sure of what profile to get (195 x ? x 15).
