what is it for and do i need it

It controls fuel evaporation. Basically stops fuel being evaporated from the fuel tank directly to the atmosphere. You will have to keep it for MOT regs, it wont hurt. It's a canister which is full of carbon granules and n e fuel which evaporates in the tank goes to this canister, then there is a vacuum cut-off valve which is controlled by the inlet manifolds vacuum, this allows the fuel vapour to either go into the inlet manifold or stay in the canister. Once the vacuum in the inlet manifold is high enough it will open the valve and allow the vapour to go into the combustion chamber for combustion.

lol i've still got mine fitted with my 2.0 16v conversion :p
