the other day i found out why rally shels and race preped shells are seam welded. i was going along at a fair speed when i heard a bang and the bonet bulged. on further inspection i saw this:

thank god i was only going round a feild! after welding it back up the gearbox is now broken, might have somthing to do with the dif being jamed with a large amount of weld and a couple metal plates lol. at least ive got 3 4speed boxs at the side of the garage! anyone else got any good battle scars?

Evidence as to why rust close to any suspension points is an mot failure.

I actually bought some bits off a lad that had that happen to a K reg 1.4 SRi last summer. he said the handling had deteriorated & then noticed a bulge in the bonnet.

And some people argue stitch welding & grp A plating is unnecessary!

you would think that but i recon if it went for an mot with it before it happend (excluding the rest of the car) it would probably have passed. its not that rusty its actualy just ripped out the spot welds. the front side nearest the light i cut to fix it.

Yeah i suppose there isnt any rust really in the pic.

Imagine how quickly a rusted one would pop!!!

I think that may have been a 206, first or second year they were being used, the strut came straight though the bonnet after a jump!

Glad I stich welded mine both sides AND added re-inforcing plates underneath.

A wrc would have blowen the top mount, not the shell.
