hey guys, my car has a ghost in it i think!!

basically i have been returning to my car from being in town, being at my gf's house or being home and the ignition is on it the car.

the lights are all on on the dash board and one night i had very loud music playing because i didn't take my head unit facia out!!!

you got any ideas of how to fix this or what is going on? it almost killed my battery this morning because i think it had been on all night. just a bit worried about getting stranded in places.

got any ideas what i could do?

a friend said i should find the main input of power to the fuse box and install a convienient switch to disable the car!?

any ideas welcome.

Martin.

sounds like your ign switch isnt going to fully off... its the black cap thing on the end of the ign barrel.

yeah it is. the ignition does turn off when i turn it off with the key, but after around 10-20 minutes it turns back on with out key in the barrel.

i'm not even in the car when it turns on, just does it!! i'm guessing it a wiring problem like a stripped wire but i've never been behind that part of the car so cant imagine slitting anything!!

I'm well annoyed with it, not sure what to do.

might have something to do with the hazzered lights switch if its a Mk 2.
turn it off and take the whole plug out and see if it still dose it.

sounds like the plug on the back of the igniion barrel, the key doesnt always turn it off and then after a while it makes a connection and switches itself on, you need to be careful with that, coz if the wrong person sees that he will try and steal your car

Might just be worth calling an auto electrician to come and have a look.
It'll cost yah but the quickest solution.

what should i do then? would a new barrel mean a new key?

what would you suggest? would putting a switch on the ignition work so when i get out i could turn it off? ghetto i know but it would probably work right?

Mart.

just a new black cap bit... no new key.

what black cap bit is this? and is it easy to fit?

not sure what part you mean? would it be easy to go to a machanic to see what they say about it.

take the plastic cowling off from round the steering column. if you look at the back of the ignition barrel you will see a black plastic cap type thing. this just clips off and the plug just pulls off also. try replacing this for starters and go from there....

the black box is a 10 minute job ;) you'll need a tiny little flat headed screwdriver tho ;)

ive got a spare black box here

sod the black box off and make a littl "hot wire" tool from a couple of wires. just remeber to put your keys in the ignition to take the steering lock off.....

you prolly wont believe this but my hazard switch messed up on my mk2 nova and u could bump start car without keys it was drivable but steering lock was on.

you dont need to hotwire it if you look at the black cap properly lol

its sounds like the black box, could either be the hole has worn away, or the screw on the box might have come loose, you could try cheating and putting a zip tie on it and see if it helps?

or you could fit an electrical cut off switch same as the rally cars then nobody could steal it coz even the hazard switch wuldnt be able to work
