Thought i'd put a post in here as i've not done one yet

Basically had the car about 4 - 5 years and 3 of those it's been tucked away in a garage with a semi finished engine conversion. Bought as a near standard SR with a blown headgasket, it came with a weber 32/34 and a few spares for the princely sum of ?50 lol the shell was very tidy and a headgasket is piss easy on a 8v vauxhall, so I got that sorted, got a 4 - 1 manifold and lowered her 60mm on some 14" alloys from my old 1.2 merit.

Got bored and put a tuned 1.3 on twin 40s in, had continual problems with that so thought i'll get a 1.6 8v on twin 40s and it just so happened a good one came up for a bargain price ;) Its since been in it's semi finished state for years, hopefully on the road for the summer

Anyway heres some pics as she stands at the moment after her first wash in 3 years , I've got a drivers door and wing that need spraying and i'm getting the arches done soon too :thumb:

Well i've not done much to this since the last update, due to work and not being ****d lol, but I got a week off and fancy doing a bit fo work to it, I'm thinking of taking all the underseal and crap from the underneath and inner arches off, I'm not sure apply back on though  I was thinking of painting it, but i'm not sure it would be too good at resisting the rot and as i intend to use and abuse it I would want a coating that would last a long time with low maintanance. Underseal i've heard is good, but traps moisture once it gets underneath and waxoyl is the same  What would you lot suggest?

SRimon
26-08-07, 03:04 PM
paint the whole lot in seam sealer, then paint on top of that

Right well I finally got some motivation and some money to do some work to this and my 1.2. I decided to put the cluster from the F13CR i sheered to bolt off into the F15 bellhousing I had lying about. I've stripped the f15 ready but don't have any pics i'm afraid lol. Will get some when I strip the F13 and put it all back together :thumb:

I also purchased a valve spring compressor and a steering wheel puller and have removed my SR wheel to put in the diamond as it was missing a steering wheel  I've also stripped the head to check if any valves were bent, which i found out they aren't :thumb: All being well should have it running and drivable by next week :D

Well i have got the F13 cluster in the F15 housing, just need to transfer the dif, no pics again I'm afraid lol just was in the mood to get on with it, nearly felt like giving up whislt getting all the old gasket remnants off though  lol Any ideas what i can use to unscrew the dif retainer, tried a screwdriver and a hammer and ended up sheering off teeth  lol luckely I have a good condition one in the F13 though.

Taking the head to get checked for trueness and a skim if needed tomorrow, should have it back sat morning to get on with the 1.2 :thumb:

No pics again, I really need to take my camera with me when i do some work lol

Got the head skimmed and then did some valve lapping on Sunday, found it tedious but quite rewarding. Then reassembled it, bolted the inlet on, cleaned the carb, and used new gaskets through out. Need to go to the scrappy to get some a few bits before i can put it all back together and get it running.

Got the gearbox reassembled with new gaskets, attempted to fit it on Saturday but just couldn't do it on my own, gonna rip the dash out and redo the loom at some point this week too.

Also going to be enrolling on a part time college course for welding so I can get my yellow one sorted, only ?80 so seems like a good idea to me :thumb:

Just got the 1.6 running again after it not being able to for ages due to a sticking starter motor lol Sounds bloody lovely, been ages since i've heard them twin 40s roaring, shame its so late so couldn't run it for too long. Will get some pics tomorrow of it and a vid :D I just wanna go out and start it up again but will have the neighbours moaning :(

Got the Blue 1.2 running and MOT'd, it went straight through :O It runs so nicely and is so quiet gonna be using it for a few weeks as the head gasket has gone on my corsa again

Sounds good mate, I had similar troubles with my starter motor, it was brand new but got sold a duff! Took it back swapped it for another, which was also no good!

3rd time was lucky though! What else you got to do before its back on the road?

SKoob
15-10-07, 07:32 PM
Well as promised a quick vid of it running

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v30/SKoob/th_MOV00584.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v30/SKoob/?action=view&current=MOV00584.flv)

Needs setting up and it now drives too with this gearbox which i'm dead chuffed about, started takeing the interior apart and the dash out to make a new loom, have done away with the heater matrix etc.. Was gonna take it for a blip but its quite loud and well known round here and its not MOTd or taxed :( Can now concentrate on getting it ready for an MOT though, will probably garage it over the winter ;)

Just been tinkering with it some more, it was spitting and popping alot through the carbs and the exhuats with the occasional flame both ends  and no matter how the timing was adjusted and the mixture it still did it to some extent, after a bit of head scratching i thought i'd check if the leads were the right way round..... well 1 and 4 were but 2 and 3 weren't lol changed them and the throttle response, engine note, the popping and spitting changed considerably :thumb: sounds ****ing awesome now!

I hate these dark evenings  but at least i've got next week off to mess about with it :thumb:

After alot of poking and prodding i've come to the decission its re-shell time, This SR will need both inner sills, drivers splash gaurd repaired, rear valance, both rear arches and both corners of the boot floor need serious surgery.

I've been using a laser blue nova diamond that had 59k on the clock when i bought her, as my daily driver and after having a look at the underneath its a proper solid motor. This SR will need some serious welding to get anywhere near being on the road again and I don't feel its worth it when i've got such a suitable replacement ready and waiting.

If anyones interested in a serious restoration project though you're welcome to this SR lol
PM me if you're interested :thumb:
