I've been playing with my coilovers today. I've tried fitting some 300lb springs and they don't seem to fit nicely into the collet's/shoulder.

Also, do you you use the helper springs?
I've fitted them, without them i don't think the 300's would fit unless they wound right up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

By the looks of it your gonna have to machine (file) the collet / shoulder so the spring fits on.
What length springs you using as they look way to short, also if your using helper springs then you'll need spacer type thing that sits between the springs so they can locate either side of it.

I did wonder if there was meant to be anything between the normal spring and the helper..
Any idea where i can buy some longer 300lb springs from?

Bit of a thread hi-jack, but the where the top of the coilover sits in the strut top can they be bought separately? How do they fit up to the std strut top? What is the point of a helper spring?

the helper spring is to hold it all in place till you drop the car (also helps hold the setup i palce if you go airbourne.

you need a collet thing between the helper and the main spring though otherwise dislocation can occur.

Faulkener springs are renowned for being good.

Mazz,

Have you tried pushing the collar into the 300lb spring before assembling it? Have you had the weight of the car on it yet, as I would expect that you are only getting a small clash and that should push it home.

I was thinking more like the top collet that fits up next to the strut top. Do they fix on or just sit in the std strut top? Where can you get them?

Thanks, i've had a look on raldes.co.uk, i assume the 1.9"/2.25" and 60mm are the inside diameters'?
I think i've found the right ones, but can't see a 60mm 9" spring, either 8" or 10" - i'll measure and compare to the original springs i've got which fit nicely..

Yea, it still won't fit overt he collar. I measured the i.d of the 300lb spring and it was roughly 58/59mm, whereas the the helper is 61mm.
I haven't offered it on the car yet, but having now spoken to the previous owner, he said he found the same. He put them on the car, heard a 'bang' and they had gone into place. But tbh, for 30 quid i might order some longer 300 springs as i haven't got the spacer that fits between the helper and the main spring..

Thanks guys :thumb:

I've just measured the original springs and they are 7.25" and a 61.5mm i.d, compared to the 300's which are 6" and 58.5mm i.d. The collar is 61mm.
What would you reccommend to do?
I might just order some 300lb springs with the same dimentions as the original's?

HELP!

i would order 300LB springs in the same fitment as your old springs that way you know they fit and have the correct poundage!

What coilovers are they ? Pretty much all front Nova coiulovers use a 2.25" spring, think Spax use some other wierd size ?
If the origionals are 7.25" then 8" ones should go on no probs ... come to think of it, how much clearance did you have between the tyre & spring platform ? ifit was close before hand then fitting longer springs will only reduce the clearance between the tyre & spring platform.

Thanks guy's
They are FK coilovers if it makes a difference?
I've ordered some 8" 60mm 300lb springs from raldes now, as my old 300lb springs are 58.5mm i.d, which is roughly 2.25" and they won't fit, so hopefully these 60mm ones will be better.
I haven't offered them upto the car yet because i didn't like the idea of running without the spacer inbetween the the help and normal spring. And with my old 300's only being 6" i didn't think they would fit unless it was wound right up (leaving little/no adjustment)
Fingers crossed it will all be sorted with the new springs! :thumb:
