At the moment I am having to fill up the oil every two weeks as i think it is all buring away. The exhaust is coated in a black substance, when i think it should be grey? It is not leaking anywhere so does anyone have any ideas or checks that i should be doingto see what is wrong?

I got the same problem no oil what so ever leaking, but filling it up every week, aint affecting performance, plugs are black and sooty though and when the engine is running it spits oil out the exhaust, head gasket is fine, how much to do the oil valve stem seals, god i hope it aint piston rings, my engine is a 1.4SR and has done 65'000

get a m8 to follow you -watch out for signs of blue smoke. most prob. the stem seals as said although may also be likely losing it up the bores as well

If thers blue smoke at start up it will probebly be valve stem oil seals.

if it is ring u will be durnig alot of oil.

Is changing the valve stem seals a major job i dont fancy it how much would a garage charge, and should i get it ported and polished at the same time

I had to change the head gasket a few weeks ago, changed the gasket, oil seals, ported and polished the head, did it in less than two days, get a work shop manual from halfords, its not that hard, just takes time, plus it needs a new gasket set, not too much$$.

I take it you have to get a specialist to port and polish the head, do you get any kind of performance gains from is how much am i looking at

you can get or borrow the equipment from a garage or shop, and do it yourself buy a work shop manual, what it does is it makes your car more responsive, buy allowing fuel and air to flow easier.
