Just done a load of work on the 1400SR daily runner ~ headgasket ~ belts etc?

I'm having trouble getting enough tension as I want in the cam belt with the roller tensioner.

If I ditch the the tensioner & pickup the slack from the water pump instead, which model nova cam belt do I want??

[it'll have rounded teeth btw] :)

Without the tensioner removed you'll need an earlier(1990) 1.4 belt, 104 tooth iirc.
Altho i dont see why you cant tension it atm.

Its easier do the cambelt with a tensioner than without. As normally the pump starts leaking as soon as you try move it.

I thought the water pump & tensioner both offer adjustment on the later 8v.

Just dial in some more tension with the water pump which I'd put a new O ring on & copper slip in.

i reckon you might have to take up some of the slack with the water pump then tension it finally with the automatic tensioner if that makes sense?

Aye, you use both.

But you can usually get away with just locking the tensioner in its slack position, remove belt.
Fit new belt, unlock the tensioner. And check the marker.
If it aint aligned you'll need move the pump.
