Im doing a project next year and i already have the car and a few other bits but im undecided what engine to put in it. Bearing in mind im gonna be 19 when its finished so insurance would be a problem. Should i go for the 1.6 8v or a 2 litre. How much difference is there between them in performance etc. Also which ever i choose the whole engine will be stripped and quite heavy tuning will be going on as ive got sepearte people working on the engine.

Give me some advice!!!

thanks

How long have you been driving? I've been driving a year and would find it hard to get cheap insurance (i.e less then a grand) for a 1.6GSi let alone a 1.6 conversion. I've just turned 20. get quotes b4 you do the coversion.
If your gonna heavily tune the engine (and declare mods) I dont think your gonna get insured. Going on your folks name could still be expensive and you'll not get any noclaims. if your gonna heavily tune the engine rather then pay the huge sums of money to uprate your engine and car why not buy a already converted nova. "Dec" is floggin his for ?6000 and its the fastest 1.6 nova around.

"why not buy a ?6k car?!!"

just reread my message. hmmm it is a bit of a contradiction. makes sort of sense though. assuming insurance isnt a problem (which I reckon it will be) buy a already modded car.

I dont wanna buy one thats already done cos i like doing everything myself. At the momnet ive had quotes for gsi's at around 1300 and the car wont be finished for about a year and a half. My budget aint gonna be up to 6000 either so theres no point going out and spending that when im gonna do the job for half that.

I've just upgraded my engine to a 1.6 with twin Webbers. The car is really quick compared to my 1.4, but it is pushing out over 60bhp more :) The 2.0 engine is a good engine, very fast, but it's heavy. The advantage of going for the 1.6 is you can get upto 160BHP from it and it's lighter than the 2.0 so handling will be slighty better. Also, insurance will be cheaper for you on the 1.6 than the 2.0 (in theroy anyway). I'm really happy with my engine, and the noise the twin webbers make is awesome. I'd definatley recommend going down this route. It's down to you and what you can afford at the end of the day.

for tuning a gte engine see nic barnes as he had one that sat around 150 brake - he said it kept up with cossies to about 90
barnesgsi@aol.com. had lots done to it but was not very reliable. dunno if he is a member on here or not though
