This is more than likely complete tosh, but saw it linked from another site.

Its an online petition which supposedly protests against EU plans to ban cars older than 10 years, which of course includes all Novas... Seriously smells of BS, there's no real information in the description of the poll, hence why its here in Muppet and not General Chat!

That couldn`t ever happen surely?? There have to be more people with older cars then with out??

This will never get passed - no way.

Production of vehicles with a useful life well in excess of 10 years has been under way for several years. Modern cars don't rot in the way that old ones did, due to manufacturing methods etc.

Perhaps a ban on vehicles manufactured before 1997, but certainly not a ban on any vehicle once it is over 10 years old - the cycle of manufacturing, disposal and recycling back into manufacturing again would be costly, and much worse on "the environment" than current systems of "i will keep my car until i've had enough".

IIRC dearest Red Ken was trying to get this added to his congestion charge, and failed miserably.

what a load of blox. They'd never be able to recycle that many cars, plus what about people with supercars eg. F40 would become a ?300k paperweight. Im guessing it's to get rid of rotten, unsafe sheds, i which case make the MOT/TUV tester do there job properly, i know for a fact my car shouldn't of had an MOT snice i bought it if they check everything. There was an artical in PPC about how older cars are greener, as something like 70% of the waste is in manufacturing, so surely the longer you run a car the greener it is :wtf: I really do believe everyone in goverment is missing common sence

modern vehicles have to be recylclable by law, and the manufacturer is responsible for that cost, so your small time vehicle breakers might start to vanish.

Old cars are a pollutant, they are also dangerous as lots shouldnt pass an MOT but somehow they do (be it a ropey station or the test simply not bieng comprehensive enough).

things like seatbelts should be compulsory retro fit to pre C reg cars.

Im about 75% in agreement about "old" cars being binned, but only ones that really shouldnt be on the roads at all rather than well maintained classics (and novas)

Yeah, but the fact they're aiming it at emissions and pollution is the wrong way to do it - technically, if "new" cars will require recycling and remanufacturing every so many years, surely the energy required and pollution involved with that process would offset older cars (of which the only pollution is that involved to run the car for the however many years its been going)?

I did see a report on a news site saying Edinburgh was planning on imposing the 10 year rule on cars in the city. I could almost see it working for individual cities, but as a nationwide change its flawed - will the government subsidise Joe Public to ditch their cars every 10 years and buy a new one?

The government is only as intelligent as the intelligence it is given in a report. If advisors say "this is fact, this is proof..." they will have little choice but to believe it, and will plan accordingly.

The fact is that most of these advisors dont get the whole picture in advance of writing these reports.

I have heard this so many times and gets me pi***d off i could go on all day. If you were to weigh in your old motor who is going to pay you or replace your old motor (nobody) they couldnt just say well we want to scrap cars under 10 years that are banggers but keep the expensive ones! I can inderstand wanting to get unsafe cars off the road but its allways the way the goverment go about it, its allways the public that get the sh*t end of the stick

I supposed they mean 'being used' as used on the roads. So a vehicle over 10 years old will not be able to be used on the roads. If it was cars over 10 years old got scrapped, I would love to see them try to get an old super car off of some rich bugger who can afford some heavy'slol

Its rubbish and would never happen. Because if it did all that WOULD happen is that people will just drive the old cars with no tax,mot or insurance and that problem would increase hugley. Its more than the police can handle at the moment!!
