View Full Version : Holy Block Batman
Pulling away from the Severn Bridge tolls (drag strip) with a Motorbike trying to undertake me, I launched ALL of my bottom end all over the M4!!
It happened ay about 7900 rpm in third, so I am expecting that the head has probably snapped! lol
The hole starts at the base of the sump (hardly ay sump left!) and continues to the head gasket.
PROPER JOB!
So, now I need to decide to open that can of worms.... 2L or 1.6 again, bearing in mind, the 1.6 has bitten my ass soooo many times, I dunno if I canbe ****d now.
Whichever I choose, it WILL be getting steel rods and forged pistons, so that I wont have any revving worries!
So I guess it comes down to bhp per ? (20XE) or more chuckable track fun (16XE)

Thats **** news Will!!! :(
Both are not cheap if you do it properly. Ive spanked serious cash on doing mine.
IF you have the money do the xe.. Dar shows that xe's are good on track.
Gutted for you mate :(
Cheers pal. If it wasnt for Dar on Sat, I wouldnt consider an XE, he was awesome...
Wanna sell me your engine? lol
Yuou are moving soon!!;)

lol in 3 years time it will be up for sale!
Infact the whole car will be ;)
Thought about xe on 45's?
What a pisser :(
As you said, ? per bhp, its got to be the XE. And tbh, i wouldn't even bother with 45's - a friend of mine has a 45'd XE and it made 162bhp :( Waste of time imho
Well I can use the TBs from teh 1.6 (they are 45mm) so they should be OK for 220 ish (with cams etc)
I just need to make a decision and fast! lol
Adam, sell it to me now... I will run it in for you!lol
Bad news, have been there myself at similar revs ! was worth it for the look on the 309gti owners face as I came buzzing past him at about 9k lol
Stock Nova GTE bottom ends do NOT like being revved that hard lol

unlucky mate, Ive decided against the 1600 and will be looking for an XE sometime in the near future. Defently more value for your money and a more reliable lump all together!
20 xe is stronger and more powerful in standard form and more hp can be achieved slightly easier than a 16xe.
However it is fact that a small block will handle slightly better but cost you a fortune to get it anywhere near big block performance.
Your never going to get good torque from a small block which doesn't make it as useable but plenty of people have gone down the small block route with excellent results.
I've only driven a mildy tuned c16xe nova and it was ok but the 165hp 20xe we replaced it with ran circles round it and obviously didn't need to be worked so hard.
I wouls STILL recommend a C16XE for teh track, its just that I am looking at alternatives now, plus the fact I dont seem to get on with them (2 high spec ones scrapped in 3 years)
I am hoping for a reliable 225-30 with a dollop of torque (more than 50lb/ft probably over the 1.6)
If dar and limpy lee can make big blocks work on track then its got to be testamont to them being fine for that use..... yes a small block is easier to get to handle, but at the end of the day you'd still have to shell out similar cash to make a small block handle perfectly anyway....
big block her mate! get mongos old bottom end ;)
lol @limpy lee:D
Sorry to hear about the engine Will. I don't really like to tell people what engine to put in because its a personal choice but since you have tried some 1.6's, try a 2.0 and see how it goes:thumb:
Nice to hear that my car is helping to dispel the crappy handling XE myth though:)
I would agree there but it doesn't have steel rods, and your playing with fire if you dont use them on a decent spec xe.
Gaz'd however ran nigh on 400hp and 8k plus revs without EVER losing a rod so it is possible, I just wouldn't risk it on one of my engines..... again lol
Aye, deffo go big block.
More power and a lot more torque for your money than small block.
Any pics of the demolished block? Lol
What a pisser :(
As you said, ? per bhp, its got to be the XE. And tbh, i wouldn't even bother with 45's - a friend of mine has a 45'd XE and it made 162bhp :( Waste of time imho
I wonder how much torque it made?

Enough to peel a banana at 17 paces!
Is it engine destruction week?
If not, we should officially make it a public holiday lol
Bad luck with the engine, and not a good place for it to happen either.
You've got to love the severn bridge tolls though, it's worth paying the ?5 just for the fun you have when leaving the gates. Although they're not quite as fun when you get there and realise you have no cash and have to be escorted across the border.

**** will, absolute nighmare, gutted for you!
Like i said with Mig. Taking N/a to the extream can cause alot of pain. I say go for a XE on Tb's with some mild cams and a worked head. Should see 190bhp and loads of torque.
Keith
2 in 3 years or 5 in 4 years!
Perhaps a rev limiter would be cheaper option lol
unlucky will, was only looking at your car in total vauxhall last night aswell
where the pics ??
Got me some steel rods and have ordered a nice specc'd head too! :thumb:
About to get some forged pistons and cams too....
Hoping for 220 ish.
Staying small block then?
Nice.
