i doubt you will get one new from gm.

make your own.

google vehicle wiring products. They can supply all parts nessecary to make a new loom. use the haynes manual as a guide for how the wiring should be

I have a GCSE in electronics and thats about it :D Wouldnt think my skills were QUITE up to making up brand new loom standard lol

Although thanks for that thought...it may be easyer than it sounds

if you can operate a crimper and have an ounce of common sense you can make a loom piece of pish.

electronics qualifications are toss when talking electrical lol

I used to work there, very helpful staff.
I extensively repaired my loom when I had my old Sport & I got all my bits from there, only thing I had to order from the supplier was the contacts for the fusebox.
My old Sport was a wiring nightmare, had some fun when I bought it from Caterham & drove it to Wales to look at another Sport before driving back to Derby.
The hazard switch turned the radio on, turning the radio on brought the ignition lights on:confused: , the interior light switch locked the car & the alarm went crackers.
I made a cracking job of the loom & even made a plug & play loom for my four brand new Cibie Super Oscars that plugged into the fusebox.

They didnt last long as some stupid woman ran into them two weeks after I got it on the road:mad:

See the relays on bulkhead near drivers strut.

Dont use the blue, red yellow insulated terminals as they are shockinly sh!te.
Get the non insulated type and a crimper to get a better quality join & a factory look. If you cant crimp then solder.
TNA19 non sticky loom tape is awesome for taping loom & heatshrink is handy to have.

soldering vehicle looms is a no no. the solder goes down the wire and makes a stiff joint so with vibrations it makes the loom fail faster.

non-insulated terminals and a ratchet crimper are all you need really.

I meant, if its not possible to do a crimp, then solder. Most factory looms have soldered joints.

ours arent...... vibration and wires snapping isnt a desirable thing. if you pull appart a loom thats not been molested the terminals will be crimped only.

MP71 is the best economy crimp tool, the PR3 is the daddy but its very pricey unless you are using it everyday

Incorrect my freind, I worked for VWP for a while & I now work for a major motor manf & they def have soldered joints in them.
Oh & I didnt say anything about soldered connectors or terminals, I said soldered joints!

meh we dont solder stuff in our vehicles..... and they make one or two a year lmao

Oh yeah, forgot you were perfect!
What do you build, airfix models!

Stuart

ffs take it personally then....... :wall:

how many airfix kits do you know that have wires in them lol :cuckoo:

Didn't take it personally, just doing what you do to everyone elselol .
But you're perfect & know everything so I'm sure wiring up an Airfix model is nothing to you:thumb:

I think we ought to walk away from this as its not helping him with his wiring question

Stuart

correct :p

anyhooo wasnt saying the way a major motor manufacturer was "perfect" but they dont have any loom related issues come back so i guess its fairly safe to assume that a no solder policy is a good one to adopt in a home made effort too.

Do you mean dont use these below?

And use these instead?

neither of those.... he means the totally bare ones. then you add your own insulation in the form of heat shrink and or the insulation boots to suit the terminal

Making an entire loom without soldering, is that possible?
How would you splice the main batt feed etc?

Stuart
23-04-07, 10:27 PM
the ones done that i see are all mechnical... ie the batt feed is crimped to fat cables and bolted together etc... no harm in having a feed rail off the battery and running the thinner lines from that etc.

stuartp

on mk2 looms and im sure mk1s will be the same the 1mm dash feed cables are wrapped into the main battery cable just on the bulkhead behind the gloove box!! its simlar to hir blatting then ins all heat strinked??? feel free to correct me tho...
