my cousin has a 2.0 8v nova with a c/r F16 on it. he is now considering upgrading to the 16v lump but we are not sure if the shafts will fit in the F20 box or would the F16 be up to the job??

I think that the '16' in f16 means the gearbox can take a maximum 160lbs/ft of torque, and the f20 can take 200lbs/ft.

I don't know what the torque figures are for a 2.0L 16V but i guess it would be around 150ish as standard.
