to much money and to much of a job want a decent spec engine by pvs got some cash lying around just need to sort a shell just thinking what to put on the engine to help it along :D

you want to hurry up then because PV is not far away and you havent even got a shell

got a shell sorted.. down my local scrapper all mint dint in the rear quater nout major! just need a few tips and idea's on engine spec
Green16v
21-04-07, 03:16 PM
so have you got the engine yet?
start with air filter and exhaust which will prob give 5-20bhp
then look into a cam with vernier 10-20bhp
chip 20bhp
FSE boost vaule 0 bhp ( just helps when getting tuned )
thats the cheap options then theres thottle bodies etc...
all figures are est.
fpmsl, i'd re-evaluate your estimates lol lol lol lol lol lol
WOW i love those estimates!!!
start with air filter and exhaust which will prob give-4/5bhp if a full system
then look into a cam with vernier 5bhp (needs be a mild cam on std injection)
chip-2/3bhp
FSE boost-Pointless
Thats more like it :)
Babi bek-How much do you have to spend?
MyNovaSr

 Worse estimates than me :D
Rough Spec of mine is...
Rebuit & Reconed DHLA 40's
Kent NVO camshaft
Extensivly worked head retaining std size Valves
the Grp A style Ashley system (4-1 manifold e.t.c)
Rebuilt, L&B bottom end, ARP bolts.
Made 140-143bhp twice.. Interestingly, the torque was something like 134 lbft
Maybe a slightly too high, but that's what your looking at..
Too get a genuine 155-160bhp you need a very very very good head, and a camshaft with much more duration/lift than mine

about 300 to spend on engine mods basicly swo not a bad price but depends what i can get for it to give me that extra POW on the track

He forgot:
Ebay Resistor - 50bhp
Electric PC fan Turbo - 20bhp
:)

save some more money and buy an LSD (not the drug).... will be of more benefit on track than ?300 spent on engine mods that really wont do much to be fair.

for added effect with the electric super charger wire it up wrong so it sucks air out of the engine.

It would be cheaper in the end up to fit 2.0l 16v
It would be cheaper in the end up to fit 2.0l 16v very true! and a lot quickerlol
It would be cheaper in the end up to fit 2.0l 16v
taking into consideration, insurance, buying engine, welding, spraying and all other assocaited parts, then add the timescale, would it???
2nd'd/\
People say "fit a xe"
but it aint as simple as that.
Staying small block is always easier, less hassel etc.
You might have to wait months find 22spline shafts etc for sale.

that is exactly why i opted to spend ?75 on a 1.6 engine, as oppose to that alone for say a tank and pump for an XE convo! No welding, no faffing, just un-bolt, and swap. Simple.

2.0 16v are FAR too common now!
I say take a 1.0 8v Nova to a show... at least you'll be different!
I remember ages ago when i used to go to shows and think
Holy **** a 2.0 16v nova... cool!
Now its more like... oh look ANOTHER 2.0 16v... oh and another ... and another.
They just aint as special as they used to be.

fitting a big block xe to a nova is pointless IMO. it just faffs up all the handling that the nova is great for. Stay with the 1.6 8v or even the 1.6 16v. ( i personaly prefer 8v but thats just me). If i was to big block a nova. it would 100% be an seh 130. i hear great things about nova 8v pissin on nova 16v. Plus it must weigh less it stands to reason!

not gonna get very far with 300 quid go for the usual panel filter and exhaust system and remember saving weight is half the battle, taking the interior out will be more noticeable than slapping on an exhaust and filter. PVS is just around the corner good luck sourcing tuning and putting together an engine by then unless its a mess! i have realised that my project will not be done till then and woul;d rather do a better job of it and bring it out for PVS 08

totally agree not just because im putting in a seh 130 ;) lol
can this NOT be the same dull fcuking big block vx small block, 8v vs 16v toss that gets repeated week in week out.

Pretty much same weight as a XE, and a LOT less potential.
Same fitting process etc too.
16v is the way forward :thumb:

?300 gets you lots of places...
?160 lightened and balanced bottom end and flywheel
?60-?70 cone filter WITH COLD AIR FEED
the rest on a zorst?
depending on how much your getting taken off the bottom end and flywheel you could be talking 15-20BHP?

well im just going on what i know. and i know the 8v sri 130 in a nova is a good choice. few mates have them and a few mates have 16v and the 8v no matter how unlikely always have the edge on the 16vs. Anyways as stuart said no point having this out as it gets done everyday almost. it waqs all just IMO

I say stick a small block in there they are great! The smaller the better:thumb:

cheers lads any more surgestions?
Big block is the only way to go for quick 'cheaper' fun, there are no arguements there and thats from me who prefers the route i took.
But with only 300 quid its going to get you nowhere, a couple of semi almost worth it mods on an 8v, or it would cover the cost of a 16v engine which can be made very good but on a budget those of us that have seen the comedy handling that kind of budget would give on track is laughable as any xe owner will admit.
Stuart hit the nail on the head, for track the most valuable thing for that money would be a second hand diff.
Again jon_nova1 i would re-evaluate your estimates, bottom end work does nigh on nothing in the grand scheme of things bar possibly give it a refresh and reliability(maybe make it a tad more revvy. your list would give circa 5bhp over standard once the losses from age were replaced imo
Definately fit a small block. XE's are ghey, and as for the 8v/16v debate, i agree, the 130 bhp 8v is much faster than the 150 bhp 16v, the power is all lost by turning the extra cam you see, not good! Plus the added metal on the cam cover weighs about 300kg!
Why people just stick an XE in when you can spend thousands bringing a 1.6 8v up to its spec is beyond me, but then I am a closet homosexual, and really only know about shoes!
Sorry, sarcasm firmly aside, do what you want with your car, thats the point, its your car. Theres plenty of people on here who will tell you an XE is a good idea as there are people who will tell you it isnt. And who cares if XE conversions are common?! So are iPods.. what does that tell you??
Stand out on a limb and build what you want to build, and then we'll all help you on your chosen path, but sitting here asking for opinions on what engine to start with will ultimately end up with you more confused than where you started, and possibly ending up where you dont want to be.

Rofl lollollol
On a budget, theres no way i'd be looking at L&B bottom end, cost is not really worth the gain.
Just abuse the std bottom end(fit ARP's), and if it blows fit another block(?40)
Simple.

i have no intention of fittin a big block by pvs it would cost me a fortune purely parts and welding of engine bay id stick to my 1600 any body have prices on a port and polish and what kinda price and bhp does it bring?

Not really sure why you think it would cost a fortune??
You already have the tank, so you just need a fuel pump.
Shafts and CV's also arnt hard to find or expensive.
Fitting kit is also not a massive amount of money.
Seam welding... All depends if you know someone who can weld, but cant see it being any more expensive than having youre 1.6 head polished!! (especailly, in answer to your question, as the port and polish will bring you no gains worth mentioning until you start beefing up the cam)
16v brakes... Feck all, theyre for sale on here all the time, and you were doing that anyway no?
Decent suspension.. you'll be doing that anyway wont you??
Sorry, im not bullying you into doing an XE, but it does my head in when i hear excuses like 'its too expensive'. Utter bullsh1t! You could build an XE for 500 quid if you wanted to, and that includes the engine and box!!
I know exactly what your saying BT, however, with a ?300 budget, and about 5 weeks till PV, itll be a hard push to source a shell, then XE it to some extent of "adeqaute"

ok sounds a plan if i was to get all parts needed i dont know any welders so if any one off here fancy's a bbq and a few hundred beers on a sunday to come down and weld my engine bay that would be great i have suspension sorted just need block i guess and other bits

all this is providing i find a shell in time thou
Tbh, i'd just save the ?300.
Theres not a lot you can do with it, modding wise.
Even fitting 40s etc would need a ?200/?300 setup, plus buying them in the first place.
Just clean the engine up, paint some bits and make it look nice if you want it look the part :)

me thinks a nice 4-2-1 manifold and system a few tassels for the wing mirrors and some nice 16's :)

Agree totally, didnt realise you only had 300 quid. Thats 9 tanks of fuel! An XE and box will cost 250 ish alone, and as Ad said, 300 quid will get you nowhere worthwhile.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/chunny01/photoshoot006.jpg
I did do most the work myself but was done in 2 weeks wile on shut down from work.
And this little proven beasty owes me about ?600 in all.

You can get an engine (xe) and gearbox loome and all the bits you need for anythiny from ?175/whatever.
The mounting kit for the engine/gearbox can be bought from chris ashley for ?40.
You can use a set of 22tooth splined gte shafts and cav gearbox shafts (1.6 cav mrk2 smallblock).
And try to find a freind to do the welding.
