Seems i mucked up and double posted and my first post was deleted.
Anyway, I was asking if anyone knew if the 1.6 gte/gsi head is a good choice to fit on the 1.4sr as I hear it has bigger valves than a GpA 1.4sr head? (from someones post)I presum the GpA one is a big valve head. Basically I want to know if it would be better than getting my 1.4 gas flowed.
Also anyone know how to remove the tamperproof cap from the mixture screw on the Pierburg 2e3 (1.4sr) as I cant seem to get it off?
Cheers

I have done this conversion on my rallycar. Basically, it was down to cost for me. A decent head will cost ?300-?400 notes and I bought a complete GTE for ?150 (accident damaged) and stripped it for parts. Therefore, the head cost me very little.

The head has the same size exhaust valves as a 1.3 Group A Head and bigger inlets, but isnt ported and polished. It will give you more power than the 1.4SR head for sure, but make sure you get the fuelling sorted as well - a std carb and a decent head wont make a huge amount of difference.

I kept the std cam in mine, but doing a cam change is easy enough when I want to - with a 1400cc bottom end, the extra duration of the GTE cam should be enough to give it that extra oomph.

Thanks m8, I will be keeping a look out for a knackered/smashed GTE! Would a 32/34 be OK for fuelling?
Also, anyone got a lightened flywheel? I would be interested to hear your comments, I had a lightened and balanced bottom end on my GT Turbo and it seemed to rev much easier...

where are you mate. I know a good mechanic who has a ported, polishd gasflowed head of a 1.6GTE. it was suppost to go on my 1.4sri but wouldnt fit due to my engine being the wrong type. this geezer is in walsall(m6 j10) based. give them a ring. its called vauxparts 01922493330

so what u reckon bolt a 1.6 GTE head straight onto the 1.4 sr block and leave the GTE cam in it. Then bolt the SR inlet and exhaust manifolds to the GTE head, will the two manifolds fit straight on? Then would you leave the standard SR carb on and adjust the fueling to suit?

I'm confused:-/ The 1.4 blocks that I've had anything to do with have fairly large unswept volume at the top of the bores. The 1.6GTE block is the same as the 1.4 except that it is bored and stroked out. This means there is virtually no unswept volume. To get the compression ratio right the 1.6 head has larger combustion chambers cast in it. If you put the 1.6 head on the 1.4 block you will effectively nearly double the combustion chamber size and in so doing the compression ratio will be drastically lower. The only way round this as far as i can see would be to step the block down. Or have I misunderstood whats being suggested?

Im confused now too - anything to add to the last comment rallynova? I thought the 1.4sri was the same engine as mine and if it doesn't fit that then should it fit mine?
CP - at least dif u are right then it would be ideal for a turbo conversion, lowered compression would stop detonation, just need to see if a 1.5td exhaust manifold/turbo would fit then we're in business! ;) Maybe a modified sri/gte injection could handle the fuelling, and drop a frontera intercooler in the bumper with wrc style water spray..........

On my 14NV, the piston comes right to (very nearly) the top of the bore and yes, the combustion chambers are slightly smaller, but not by very much. Its nowhere near almost double the chamber size on the 1600.. There will be a lowering of compression yes, but with it skimmed (not too far mind you!), the compression goes back up to a sensible level.
