I want to make my own cage just the rear has anybody tried this before and got any handy tips to do so, what pipe have you used etc!
id say NEY NEY NEY NEY
the cage will be no use for motorsport so selling the shell on will be a hoe (if people care that its not MSA approved), plus if your crap at welding you could envisage the pipe work kebabing you

i wouldnt recommend it as my mate made one about a year ago and impact from the wrong angle can extremely weaken the welding.

just started making a buggy in college, basiclly the same principles only on a larger scale. you'll need a detailed plan to work from and you need to make sure you get the fishmouths rite otherwise you'll screw it all up, as for the bending of the pipe you'll need a proper pipe bender and someone who knows how to use it, the same goes for the welding unless you no how to weld you'll need someone who does, trying to weld circular pipes isn't easy. if you havent got the equipment and the space i wouldn't bother love. its more hassle than its worth and could end up costing you more money than it would have to buy one in the first place.

sorry mate its www.speedgenie.co.uk
as the woman said,
assume you charge the measily rate of ?10 per hour for your own time at the weekends, that only leaves you 18 hours of work without taking into acount cost of parts... 18 hours isnt long to design and make a cage to be fair... in essence totally a waste of time.

What ? its your own 'free' time, you can't really stick an hourly rate on your own work, if that was the case then it would of probly been cheaper for me to go out and buy a Veyron rather than build my Nova !! lol
As folk have said tho, i wouldn't bother, you could end up making it less safe with a badly made cage than without one !!
My mate at works a shell fabricator & builds cages for WRC cars everyday ... its not as easy as it looks !!

Have you squashed the tube flat where it joins the main hoop ?
How have you mounted it to the floor & rear arches / strut tops ?
Rich
ahh but you cant buy your nova off the self in its desired spec....
your time does "cost" if you have aload of things to do, pick the best route to get there be it making one thing as it WILL be cheaper than buying and the other way round etc...

Mr Ed say's NAY!
I agree, best buy one rather than make one up. If you take no notice of me please take Mr Ed's advice:thumb:

i dont know whats worse!
Someone with a fake show cage or someone thinking about making a roll cage when they dont have the skill/equipment to do it.
Thats like me saying
Can i make some 6point harnesses out of all my shoe laces... not necessarly safe but might look good and be cheap!

What if they have the skill and equipment to make one?
As I have said many times before, if it is only for looks, get some 40mm plastic waste pipe from B&Q and cover it with roll cage lagging from demon tweeks.
if its for "show use only" get busy with plastic pipes and a placcy welder

A cage is made of steel tube welded together if someone had the skill thet could also make one to,
As for the harness made of shoe laces its hardley the same example, as a real harness isnt made of shoe laces, if someone has the skill and equipment to make a harness im sure they could make there own to.
the problem is that an incorrectly designed/made cage is more dangerous than no cage. A few months ago someone posted some photos of a nova with a rear cage & no rear seats that had pretty much split in 2 & killed 2 girls that were riding in the back. A roll cage is a device that is designed to massively strengthen a bodyshell for a limited lifespan. A modern wrc car lasts maybe 2000km before a complete stripdown & examination with gear that is spaceage. A touring car is lucky to last 10 races without a major crash. For a roadgoing car, the benefits are limited, and if you want to 'alter the structure of your car' then the insurers should , rightly, demand to inspect the work, so getting a professionally done cage is a safe bet.

its not squashed 'flat' jus squeezed in a lil an then champhered* round the pipe too...
iv yet to make the plates for mounting it to the floor/arches as im still deciding if i want it welded in or bolted in... either way trust me it'll be solid:thumb:

Only thing im going to say is someone has to make "the" cage at some point be it someone who gets paid to do it or not. If you know what your doing then do it an by that i dont mean you can bend tubing an weld, it does need some thought.
I think some people seem to think that all rollcages are made by special rollcage making machines and not by people.
Its not only that but you do need to be aware of the MSA regulations regarding roll cages. Anyone can make a cage that conforms to the rules 'if' they have the right equipment and know what the rules are.
If you have to ask the question 'Home made rollcage yeh/nay' then I would assume that your best off not bothering.
What if they have the skill and equipment to make one?
they wouldn't be asking the question...
A modern wrc car lasts maybe 2000km before a complete stripdown & examination with gear that is spaceage. A touring car is lucky to last 10 races without a major crash
touring cars are stripped down and every piece is benchmarked after every single time the car turns a wheel under it's own power
