i've purchased some new piston rings, i know the oil scraper rings go on the bottom, but the other two rings, unlike the originals one is steel like (dark grey, roughish, maybe with a coating )and the other is aluminium (shiny silver) i think, which order do i put these on? does the steel one go on the middle or top?

The rings should be of different thickness, check the old rings is the top ring a keystone ring or internal bevaled sorry for the spelling

the new ones are bevelled, the steel one is bevelled, but the old ones are identical to each other

I think the middle ring is internal bevaled

The top ring isnt bevaled at all the ring should say TOP on one side or a DOT,if you take the middle ring of and look across the ring gap on the piston you can see where the beval is top or bottom of gap

the bevel is on the outside, its thicker on most of the ring, but the outer edge is thinner, it tell me to put it so the flat part faces up
