XE alt. mod, depth question

How far in do you have to mod the chassis leg for the alternator clearence? :confused:

I've got various pics, but can't really judge the depth..

I think it kinda depends; trial and error..
Some one on here may say 'mine was cut/bashed back around half an inch', - but yours may need more..? Also rally/hi- spec mounts, shell strengthening may play a part -as in engine won't move as much as with lesser mounts, and shell won't flex as much if welded/plated up lots - out on the road.

I saw on one of these threads that someone mounted the alternator on the bottom of the front of the block, I don't know how much work was involved though.
