Today i noticed that my 4speed f10 gear box has a 5 speed diagram on the top of the gear box? Is this bit just a universal part that is the same on all gear boxes:confused: , Could my F10 be a 5 speed? The gear stick has a plastic block stoping it from going 5th speed position.

Many thanks

All selector housings are designed for 5 speed, If yours is a 5 cog box it'll have an extra bit between the casing and the end cover.

if i chop the plastic bit off and its not a 5 speed then what will it be ok?

it was probably a vauxhall fcuk up, it happened with lots of novas, and they put a crappy block to stop you getting in fifth, if you cut it off it'll still be the same if its a four speed

My F10 has the same 5 speed diagram on the gearbox casing.

the top casting is the same on the 4 & 5 speed. The 5 speed is based on a 4 speed casting with an extra bit bolted on.
Look under the left arch & if you can see a large (36mm) hexagon plug then it is a 4 speed. the 5 speed doesn't have one.

no you'l just get 3rd or nothing.

there have been lots of people who have found they have a 5th gear on a 4 speed model.

Most assume it was because vaux ran out of 4 speeds and instead of making a new batch it was cheaper installing blockers on the highly preduced 5 speeds. This could be an old wives tails like the 'sris have gsi components cuz they were running out of standard parts'. Which is rubbish, it was just down to SRis needing the better components

This is true, Ford are the biggest user of this phenomenon towards the end of a production run. Late escorts are a complete mishmash of different parts. Alternators for a start, theres 5 or 6 different ones that were used on the 1.6 towards the end, and ive even had a mate who had an XR3i with the RST gearbox, complete with LSD. This was a bog standard unmolested one owner car, and the factory threadlock was on the gearbox bolts. Very odd indeed.

If you can find a very very late Golf GTi MK2 on a J plate, apparently some of them had the MK3 management due to VW having to develop a CAT because of impending emissions regs, but to save writing a map to run a 1.8, they had everso slightly wilder cams and ignition timing so it could run the 2.0 map. This could be a bit of a legend, but ive driven a lambda J plate, and it did feel a bit lively :wtf:

i once repaired a mk4 astra 1.6 using the same donor car but a year different and the engine loom was nothing alike.
