Me and my mate are rebuilding his nova gsi 1.6 8 valve from the ground up. We have all the main points covered. We have fully adjustable suspension, vectra gsi brakes all round, the interior is being sorted want to keep it standard. The body has been fully stripped and is now primed and ready to be painted.
Now my question is, we have the engine removed and have decided on a full rebuild. He wants more power but just to still be relativley standard. The head is off and goin for a port and polish and uprated valves, springs etc and when its back its getting a metal headgasket and a lower temp thermostat. Also Putting in a lightened Flywheel and uprated clutch. Any ideas on what else we can do to improve performance even more? What would ye reccommend on a bottom end rebuild. :thumb:

metal headgasket = waste of time + cash, cool stat = waste of time and cash.

what size valves are you getting fitted? which air flow sensor have you got (ie early engine with a dizzy or later engine with a dispack)

on a bottom end rebuild i would do:
get crank checked for scoring, and have it polished if its fine, regrind if its naffed.
deseam and shot peen the conrods
ned bearings
ARP rod bolts
have the bores checked, hone if ok, rebore if needed.
new rings
assembled properly.
have the deck checked for level and flattened if need be
check oil pump over as per haynes manual instructions.
