there is a harsh metal sounding rattle sound coming from underneath my car. I thought it was the exhaust but it sounds like its coming from the gear box. Is the gear box on its way out ?

Bit more info . It mainly does it in neutral and sometimes changing gear. I think it is the original box from 1992.

Could be the thrust bearing in the clutch. Get a Haynes for what to do next and check the oil level in the g/box whilst you're at it.

mine did that, under further investigation it turned out to be some shitty bracket on the exhasut at the bottom of the downpipe that had sacked itself and was rattling about
just cut it off and have done - its broken anyway hence the noise
Hi officer.

The bad rattle I had was from one of the springs of the zorst joint under the back of the engine (like Fester had by the sound of it), but it sometimes sounded like it was the gear box. It was only after I clambered under the car that I found it was the zorst.
It could also be the hand-brake cable.....I've had that rattle like a bastard too, especially at tick-over.

either relocate it or make a bracket up.
