View Full Version : Dar's Sprint Car
I love seeing my car from a chase car :D
Adam - Apparently that Pulsar is running 400bhp. I know hes spent a small fortune on it and he deffo catches me easy on the straights.
Once I have sorted the Nova it really will need a hike in power in the near future.

sorry to hear you broke it dar but did look like it was absoulty flying from where i was watching, so did chris as well, what clutch are you running in there i am runnign an ap uprated item in mine,
Mine was just a standard item, but it will be replaced with something alot more exotic this time. I generally (if I think its ok) use the standard part and it they brakes replace it with stronger a bit.
I just need to get the engine out and 100% confirm that it is what I think it is and then I will order the new shiney bits.

you going for more power form the engine or just once you have comfirmed it is the clutch then replace and back in you going for a small flywheel and clutch 7 1/2" item when we picked will f's engine up it was fitted with a tiny multiplate clutch and small flywheel looked cool
For the time being its going back in as is (I have an engine that will be being done whilst this one is still in the car), I just want to confirm its the clutch and not something else. Just to be sure. I plan on getting the engine bay modifyed a bit more as well.
It will be replaced with a 7 1/2" multi plate version.
Whilst im in your thread Dar, have a couple of pics i took of yours at PV

Just backs up my arguement that big power turbos just dont cut it on a track
You always say that but there are plenty of Turbo cars that do perfectly well on track. Mine seems to go well enough.

I had some free time today. So both me and Chris attacked the car!
It was already on the ramp

Now its time to have a word with my little bro about some fabrication work :D
On a side note I also fitted my new 6" 350lb front springs.
Jammy git having that lift ramp, makes things so easy lol
What coilovers do you run Dar?

you don't know your born mr pursey!
lol, the ramp is very handy, esp now I have removed the bar that went across the garage giving me a few more feet of height
Adam - AVO's :D
Ooo, you broke that clutch proper. I was expecting the material to come away from the plate. Agreed, you are jammy for having a ramp!

Are the bodies not bottoming out on the underside of the top mounts with springs only 6" in length?
Mine nearly bottom out with 7" springs
Ash - I knew I had seen ply used like that before. Thanks for posting the piccy :thumb:
Adam - I still have over an inch's worth of travel. I will grab a piccy for you.
Cool :)
How low do you run the front end?
I have just under 4" of piston travel left roughly.

Nice Dar :) Is the engine out for a reason? I appreciate the clutch is fooked, but that doesn't require removing inlet fannimolds. Are there some power mods planned, or just doing a stripdown and inspect?
I have plans ;)
It's out so that the engine bay can get some TLC. However you know how one thing leads to another :D
Nathan - Have you measured your spring length when there is full weight on them and when there isn't?
I have plans ;)

Is Dar doing some engine mods then :eek:
I fecking hope not lol.
I cant afford to keep up with this bugger at the moment :) Actually, I cant afford to live pretty much at the moment either lol
Im feeling headwork and cams on the way
I do have a whole host of engine parts including a very nice set of cams & fancy rods. But they are for later.
Played around for abit today. Just taking more bits off of the car and tidying up the loom in the engine bay. Not much to see but I do like Novas with the wings off. They look kinda cool that way.

Any update and pics Dar? We don't want it going stale in here :)
It's back on the floor again and the front has had a bit of cosmetic surgery (and a respray (rattle cans FTW)). It also sports a quaife quick rack. So not much has changed.
Although my garden has had a complete transformation and I now have a big shed at the bottom of it. The house has also got bigger. We also now have four chickens. This has not improved the Nova in any way shape or form.
However my wife and kids love me that little bit more :thumb:
Now all that **** is done I can concentrate on the Nova again, so there maybe updates in the near future.

Time for a proper update. As you know I took the engine out and bought a new clutch. Whilst the engine was out I had some more work done on the engine bay.
Nothing major, just a little tidy up on the wires, a little paint to some areas and a bit more welding.

Thats how its been sat until I got the new clutch and the bolts that arrived yesterday via Chris post. So whilst the big man was there we fitted the clutch.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/2009%20Mods/DSC08481_640x480.jpg
I also found that one of my CV gaters was broken. However this was put on new at the start of this year. So I took of the drive shaft and found that the circlip holding the shaft in had snapped. I am guessing that the missing part made it's way out to the big wide world and made the hole on the way.
So my car continues to break odd bits.

Another small update. Well all updates should be small now anyway since there is nothing really left to do other than clean it up a bit.
Started up the car this evening, yay, it still works.
The brakes are all sorted now. I just need to get the car on all fours and test them out to see if they are ok.
So I bought lots of bits from Rally Design and bolted them on to the car.If anyone buys these:

So it was my first time trying out the new clutch which I thought was going to be a bitch. But I am happy to report that it's still very controllable on the clutch. Don't get me wrong it's visious when it does bite and the window of slip to locked is small but you can slip it to get going, then let it out.
The brakes will take alot of getting used to though.

It's a drift car so the diff is welded, we fitted the hydrolic handbrake this evening as well as a few other bits and bobs. It has HUGE wheels on it which isn't great for drifting. Nothing mental about it but it's awesome fun. It has different suspension etc etc and a modifyed M3 engine, nothing to mental though.
The most intresting thing about the car is that the genuine German WWII firemans helmet on the roofrack glows in the dark :D
Rick, going from using servo assisted brakes to non assisted brakes takes a little getting used to. They feel good though. If however they arn't then it's just a case of getting the right MC for the application. It's not a big deal.

what's the front cut out for in your lower panel dar?
Thats what I am going to use as the main mounting point for the front splitter. I plan on having some brackets on the splitter that slide over the square bar. The reason I am changing it is because with the splitter on it's a bugger to get on and off of the trailer. So I am making it eaiser to fit and remove.

I will (If all goes to plan) be updating this thread in the week showing whats happening to the engine :)
The billy bonus of the day was finding out that the flywheel is a lightweight steel one. Bonus!
Good stuff, will be interesting to watch you on track once you get that nice, new XE in!!!
It should be fun. It was rapid when I went out as a passenger when Chris owned the engine and I plan to make it faster.
Yep, it went fooking well when Lee took me out at Combe, and that was in standing water spinning the wheels in pretty much every gear! lol
Finally found some time to put in the steel rods :) I have had these things for years. Just been waiting for a proper engine build.

Got some done at last lol.
Oo they are a bit sexy, are they cast? Or machine made?
Do you not use arps? Or are they them?
Good work.
they are arps by the look of it to me.

Oh they look fitted to mine when i had them, only reason i asked.
Benn, they are ARP 2000 rod bolts (they came with the rods). I couldn't tell you much about the rods off of the top of my head. Except they are the dog doodas H-Section strong as feck ones :D
Nice :D :thumb: I dont like parma violets much though lol

Ah ok cool, what does h-section mean then? the cross section through the rods is an H shape, it gives the rods a greater moment of inertia for a given mass to reduce the deflection without increasing weight. Or in this case to reduce the weight and I'm sure increase strength/stiffness!
Works the same way an RSJ does.
All that weight saving has given me a ROD on lollollol
I take it needs 400cc less to go all the way lol
Nice little bit of weight saving, good to see your still tinkering with the car!
And when its back on the road is it any chance i can pay you to make a copy of your rear diffuser. pretty please :):D

If you have a plastic ruler its easy to bend when it's flat, but impossible when it is rotated 90deg along its axis (balancing on its edge). The ruler still weighs the same but the mass is further away from the centre. So by using a H section instead of a narrower solid square section, you move the mass away from the centre and make it stiffer.
Thats kinda how i took it, cheers for the info tho :)

What is the gear normaly made of? LOoked steel to me when i had mine off,
Whys it good to fit steel stuff?
The standard ones are sintered steel and if you run a solid pulley they can shatter. Since I will be running a solid engine pulley I decided to get one. A friend of mine had it happen to him on his rally car, ££ of engine knackered!

Looking good in TV. Congrats on an Ace feature :thumb::d:)
Put the remote brake bias adjuster in yesterday. It all worked out quite well. The length of cable supplyed was exactly the right length and I used the old speedo cable hole to route it in to the cabin. Then it fitted perfectly in the dash where the 12v power outlet was. Only took about 5mins to install. Bargin.

Someones already in for one session and a few others are in line for a trip, but you may be lucky on the day. Some times it comes down to timing. Come and see me on the day.
Whats in, engine wise???
Lee's old engine???
Or has my question been answered a few pages back? lol

Thanks Scott. It's been good catching up with you lot at the events :) I'm feeling the love. Not ordered the shaft yet Will and no track days booked either Iain. However my enthusiasm is creeping back. Got loads of little ideas on how to improve the car. Onwards and upwards.

Looks good. The cut cam bdlt cover, is it not worse like that, as something could go in the top and rip/jam.
I've always run it like that.
I cleaned up the discs as well today. They were full of rust and dust. So thought it was a good idea.

Are you waiting on an LMF equal shaft? I ordered one about 2 weeks ago and am also waiting lol
I had no problem with leaks. Don't get me wrong the car leaked, but the splitter was well away from the exhaust. Apart from where the manifold bolts to the rest of the system. I ran it close and then cut the burnt bit away :)
Yup from lfm for the shaft. I am now hoping that they got a few on order from two weeks ago. Mind you at the pace my car is getting developed I don't think a long waiting time is going to be an issue. However I can put the old shaft in if the car is ready for mapping before the shaft arrives.
New drive shaft arrived and fitted. It's nice to have the car rolling again. The front splitter mounting is only temp at the moment.

Fill the gaps up in the splitter & bumper to splitter for a greater effect; I could never make mine that low & drive it on the road!
A very small update. I started it up! Yay! It's been a long while.
At first there was a horrible scraping noise that turned out to be the alternator touching. I have always had problems with clearance there, so will fit the smaller Denso alternator and see if I can get it to fit better.
However once that was disconnected it fired up and ran sweet, ran it up to temp then switched it off. Surprised that it ran as well as it did considering the modified engine and the same engine map as the standard XE.
I am also redesigning my dashboard. With this in mind here is the start of my latest project.

Oh my are you Michael Knight and your installing kitt into your nova lol
Looks a fancy bit of kit Dar, tell us more.
Yup Neo pixels, 14 segment LED display, three way switch, rotary encoder and a button.
Going to develop on a ATmega2560 and then see what IO I end up using, but will probably end up running on another chip.
It's just a bit of fun at the moment, I need to plug in to the MBE system to see if I can extract the data I want before it goes in the car.
The neo pixels will be a rev counter from around 4000 rpm to around 8000 rpm. Will go all red for shift light indication. The 14 segment display will always show current rpm.
I also plan on adding voltage and water temp. I needed a new electronics project, I already had the neo pixels and the 14 segment display and thought that would make a cool rev counter.
Will post a piccy of it running with a mock up rev indication.
A quick mock up. The LEDs are mega bright. So had to turn them down. Once finished this will all go behind a smoked panel.

I love neopixels and the simplicity of the arduino, although it's a bit Lardy if you want some lightweight system.
then again, if you wanna go full fat use the esp8266 wifi unit lol
I setup the MEGA as a programmer. So I can free up the dev boards once a project is finished. I really love the arduino stuff, been buying bits and bobs just for fun. I have some little wireless modules that I haven't used yet. Need to find a project for those.
I've got so many sensor breakouts etc from China lol currently have a wifi unit reporting temperature to a sever for no real reason lol

Not had a speedo in the car for years. Been building the actual dash today. Moving everything in to the middle so that I have space to take the cage forward to the front turrets. Will put up some pics.
Thanks for the update I've been wondering non stop since March if you had a speedo
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Lol. Just shows how much time I don't have to play with the car and come on here. Mind you since March I've started it, found the alternator was rubbing. Had to take the tb's off make more clearance for the alternator. Then put it all back together whilst rerouting the engine loom slightly.
