K, noticed bearing grease pissin out of the drivers rear centre cap last night, took it to kwik-fit this morning and slapped with a ?400 quote.:(

Apparently the handbrake cable has been wedged in that little runner bit, (which I never felt when driving it), which has then made the pads wear down to metal and the cylinders are leaking aswell. Which, in effect 'contaminated' the pads an shoes. Also need the near sides of the cable 'cos they freyed when trapped.

Now, anyone know how much these parts would be to buy direct? And if it's an easy enough diy job. Either that or anyone willing to do the job cheap, but proper??

cheers!

Without getting accurate quotes I would guestimate you could do it for under ?100 with factor parts. Closer to ?50 if you for 2nd hand drums and cylinders, which might be a false economy.

New Handbrake cable and shoes should cost you less than ?20. (i got my cables from ebay for about ?6-7.

very easy DIY, but do one side at a time so you have a reference lol. get a haynes manual too.

That is comical & matey that quoted you the ?400 will be taking a month off on unpaid leave to recover from the laughter if you take them up on the quote!

You could get a decent 2nd hand drum, beam with decent parts on for next to nothing. I threw away all the items you need a few months back, & they were all nearly new.

Bearings, drums, shoes, cylinders & cables will be approx ?100 at a guess. If you have the tools it shouldnt be too hard to do it with a mate at the weekend.

A few weeks ago I bought new handbrake cables, both rear and both front wheel bearings, 2 drums and all 4 shoes for about ?110. Haynes wasn't much use with regards to pressing the new bearings into the drums. I used a rubber mallet to get them in, then a suitably sized socket/'safe' end of a holesaw with soem wood over the top and a big hammer to hit them in, make sure they go in evenly and all the way.

Its worth popping to a dealer to get a new handbrake cable adjuster nut aswell for about ?2 as my old handbrake cable sheared off in mine lol.

kwik-fit are a set of robbing b@st@rds (no offence to anyone). they told my mate he needed a full exhaust system and when i looked at it it was only one of the clamps that had rotten away. i will never take my car there, ive heard other stories aswell as that one.

So you reckon the drums, shoes, pads & cylinders for both sides should cost around 100-150? So if I go somewhere else, telling them exactly what I need etc I should get a price for around 200? Or where could i get the parts directly? Main dealership, would they order them in or what? I'll probably get a mate to help me, just need to know where's best place to get the parts.

Cheers fellas!!:thumb:

you shouldnt need drums, just shoes, cylinders, bearings and spring kits

oh good place for stuff is autovaux. DO NOT goto vauxhall for parts, they will screw you over

They said I'd need new drums, 'cos the pads had worn down to the metal and they were rubbing metal on metal. I now wish I had taken a damn photo of it. What effect would it have if it needed drums, and i missed them out?

When you take the drums off, see if there is excessive scoring on the braking surface on the inside, if there is, change them. If you wore them down too far they'd start to go 'out of round' and cause the whole car to wobble when you brake (I had this problem with a brand new pair of drums). If you've had a brake fluid leak in there then make sure you degrease the inside of the drums (and the backplates too depending on how bad the leak was) properly.

There is scoring on the inside drum, not sure if it's excessive but i'd rather be safe than sorry. Both cylinders are leaking so i'll make sure n give them a good clean out.
Looked on autovaux and can get two drums, and a set of shoes for ?54. can't find the rear pads or cylinders on there, where could you suggest i'd get them from?

you dont need rear pads lol. thats what the shoes are for.

and call autovaux as their internet prices arent always accurate, plus you might be able to blag a discount for buying ltos of stuff...

Was told it's rather dodgy to drive it atm, according to a mate he said if they "pop" my brakes go completely...true? How much would "trade price" be? For the lot? drums, shoes, pads and cylinders? Also need the two rear sections of the handbrake cable, 'cos they've freyed when trapped. Pm price mate?:(

rear cylinders are only about ?8 each near me. they've qouted you roughly ?120 per hour on the labour based on the price the parts can be got for at most motor factors, and the fact that it'll only take them about 2 hours to do.

Cheeky b@st@rds. Hearing all this how I can get all the parts for around ?100 makes me really fukcing glad I never told them to do it. Won't be going back there anytime soon for sure.

Some back street garages charge ?15ish an hour for labour too, which isnt so bad.

Just crack on with it & ask on here for help. Take pics of the insides with a camera phone as you go incase you need to refer back to how the spring was held in before it 'pinged' accross the driveway!
