Always help to keep the motivation up! WIth PV only a month or so away, theres still plenty to do!
Progess looks quick, but thats only because it always takes me ages to get the pics up! lol
The RWD if still going strong...was leaving black lines around most roundabous and junctions in w.sussex last weekend! Bloody dangerous though! lol
Onto the saloon. Spent satarday in the workshop next to where I work putting the beam together. They've got some nice heavy duty steel workbenches to bolt all the stuff down to jig it up and keep it straight.
I wanted to make a beam for it, as the std nova beam seemed to sit up flat againt the chassiss leg when it was right down, plus I wanted to really stiffen up the rear beam by havibng the cross-bar going from wheel top wheel instead of a foot infront of the rear wheels (making it twist a lot easier).
So welded all the tubes, turned ends and laser/plasma cut bits up.

Loving the fabrication on this, where will the water pipes be running through to the boot ?

Rear beam looks superb! Good work :D
Your not happy with the origional rear beam so you go and fabricate a new one from scratch !! lol
Top effort fella, looking forward to seeing it at PV, you gonna run it up the strip ? It'd be rude not to !!
** How come you aint delocked the doors ? **
Austin_Nova16
29-04-08, 07:09 PM
Yeah, water pipes out through the boot floor then down the tunnel hopefully...I cut to holes so far, but havn't got any further with that ...another job to do!
Couldn't bring myself to de-lock the new doors...just could't do it! lol
I'm in the middle of making up some ally banks to fit in the lock holes though... I say in the middle, but I started them a good 10 months ago, nearly finished one, then havn't got round to finisheing them off.. lol Only a hours work in them anyway (as i'm a beginner on the lathe)

Good lad !!
Aye i'll be along in mine, can't drive all the way to Pod without running it up the strip ... i'm not gonna leave till i get a sub 13 sec run (or untill it goes bang !!) lol
Wheels look superb, they work well with the old skool colour.
LOL @ just going and making your own rear beam, classic stuff.
Your fabrication/welding skills are truly awesome, how long have you been welding for? self taught?

Thinking outside the box is something you're doing successfully each attempt it would seem now Austin.
My only concern with rose jointing the beam mount to chassis points is wont that allow for greater lateral stress on the lower strut mount points?
Before the flange of a conventional bush would take a proportion of the lateral force under load, but a rose joint will allow complete freedom of movement along this axis. Would this not pose an issue?
Loving the colour and simplicity of such a build ;)

Thanks to all for the comments! :thumb:
Andy - did a similar launch at PV on the sat and broke the gearbox on the 2nd run.. gutted!!
I guess its a bit euro / oldskool ish...
BR (thats Flush isn't it?) - have been thinking about that as well, but checked some tables on the strength of the joints when I bought them, and I think it should be ok.. Was considering some sort of watts type linkage, but that would be extreem overkill i'm sure...
Was also well gutted to not make it to PV in the saloon, as I spent all eves and w/e's on it on the weeks approaching the show, as well as splashing out on some essentials - custom gaz coilies, pedal box and a few other odds and sods. Still having a few issues trying to start it, but another ecu and chips on their way! PV with the blue nova was all good though. The PNG stand was sorted!
As far as other progress, i'll get some pics up soon i hope. Prity much all together, just flatting of the paint needed and a few other final bits.

you ditched the corsa servo & mc then? because of problems or just as an upgrade?

Any 'lateral' loads will try and create a moment about the rose joint, which will be reacted longitudinally by the rose joint on the otherside...will it not?
I.e a load from the left of the beam (right hander) would attempt to pivot about the left hand RJ, using the beam as the lever arm, which would be reacted by the RJ on the otherside but in the preferential longitudinal direction. At least thats what I'm thinking :tard:

Probably using a Corsa bias box & running it with the Corsa pedal arrangement.

stunning build mate:D
i love the quality of fabrication and thougth that has gone into the car.
the only thing that is personaly worrying me is the rear beam, it looks good but i would personaly not trust those rose joints, i hope you have thought things through properly regarding this as the last thing i would want to hear is something about the rose joints giving way.. they look way too small tbh anyway, and with the loads going through them i dont think they would last long anyway untill play apeared..

tada! itll just be there all finished at billing..

11-07-08, 10:05 PM
hehe ck a rose joint is inherently stronger than any form of rubber / poly / nylon bush, it just allows 360° movement whereas a flat faced bush creates a flange taking some of the load from an axis
yes i know that, but when cornering hard there is going to be tremendous amount of stress going through those 2 rose joints. i would have speced them a damn sight bigger
as i am generous and i love this build if you have any doubts yourself austen i have some rose joints here which are used in the aeromotive industry, beleive they are used for some of the main rotor parts on a helicopter. you welcome to have 2 of them for free.
heres a pic so u can see what i mean for size..

The beam seems all good, but so far i've only driven it up the stip, and thats it! I had some modified 7-style coilies on the back which wern't ideal, but that should all be sorted this week.
The front knuckles seemd to give it insane bump steer, so no good. Was all over the shop on my one run!
Didn't even get to test the breaks as I only went 40-50 tops!!
Seems like the pedal box should do the job..but only got piddly brakes on it. I did by some KAD 6-pots, but they didn't fit unfortunatly...would have been nice :(
I wanted to hide the master cylinder, so bias box with those type of master cylinders was teh only way..
Had some cooling system issues as well, but made up a bleed for the back and one off of the thermostat housuing along with a new header tank, so thats sorted now. I'll have to get some pics of that.. Always forget to take a camera up the workshop..
this is the new project...propper rotter but love it.. edit....that 3 replacemnet arch lips on that side!

Same difference IMHO bar a few mm.
Austin i found exactly the same, my nova was terrible to drive with them inverted. Made it wander loads and just generally feel unsafe.
BRoadGhost
03-03-09, 07:20 PM
You have to be low enough to warrant them on the front preferably with short bodied struts designed to have less droop; arm angles parallel with ground give a razor sharp directness compounded by a quick rack and solid mounts. This however can be reduced without touching the front.

You have to be low enough to warrant them on the front preferably with short bodied struts designed to have less droop; arm angles parallel with ground give a razor sharp directness compounded by a quick rack and solid mounts. This however can be reduced without touching the front.
I went low on 17's and 15's, struts the same as grahams and it was still ****ing pap.

Great update Austin. The car is awesome!
Any chance of some close ups of the boot floor/rad arrangement.
Does the std waterpump move the coolant about effectively to the rear & what header tank have to swithed to/why?

I have short bodied struts on mine as well (the extra low gaz) and run it in the weeds... Looking at it, I can't see any need for reverse tappers in the first place, a measurement of bump can be taken statically, and then any fine adjustments can be made to sort any bump issues by heating the knuckle part with an oxy and bending..
I'll try and get some better pics of the rad arrangement at the weekend, and update a bit more.
Just fitted the new 2 1/4" rear coilies, so its all looking good.
The cooling system seems to be working fine at the moments, it bleeds up nicely and maintains a constant temp, although I havn't used it on the road yet...
I originally had a motorbike filler neck and cap located under the 'turbo' cover part but it would piss out coolant when it heated up and became pressurised. I've now made a neat little tank which is located under the cover, which has a 20psi cap on it, so the system runs at a higher pressure.. I'll get some pics of that as well..
Cheers for the comments!!

I'm ashamed to say that this is the first time I've looked at this Project thread - my apologies.
It really is a most impressive build.
Thanks To Burgo who pointed me in the direction of this thread...........I was looking at it mainly to see the details of the fabricated rear beam.
I will try and contact you to discuss it further if that's OK?
Or perhaps you could drop me an e-mail at;
colinesmith@aol.com
I am looking into a new rear beam for my 1.0 turbocharged hillclimb/sprint Nova (also on Projects).

wasnt it something oil related? iirc it was smoking due to burning it all off. Not a major prob, but it caused misfiring & black smoke.

Hi Chaps,
Sorry for not getting back to you Colin, not been on here much. What do you want to know (if its not too late!)
The car runs like a dream tehse days. Loves to shred tyres..
Just for an update, I ran the car at the pod at the retro show in July, did a 14.15 @109mph. Still soooo much wheel spin all the way up, but i've just fitted some Avon super softs on the front and hope to get up there before the end of the year to see some decent times. These new tyres should make a big difference as the rolling diameter is now 3"+ bigger and they may actually stick to the floor.
Been cracking on with my mk2 cortina recently, painting my Landy 110 and building/moving woprkshops, so lots on..

I found this car on facebook through Total Vauxhall and there was a link to this thread and have sat here for an hour reading through it.
Man you are one multi talented dude! This is a sick build, can’t believe the things you have custom made for this car. The rear axles are mental, I also love the fact that you have used the standard grill bumpers (hiding the intercooler) and number plates on this I’d so hire your services well done.
Is that Mini yours? Is it orange? Dam me want that BIG time!
nice build, think ill be nicking a few ideas if you dont mind ;-)

Saw the thread dug up.
Thanks for the comments chaps!
The mini is my mates vtec. About 230bhp so pretty lively! Hes used it about as much as i have used the nova. Just one trip to the pod last year and that was it!
Hoping to get a few miles on it this year anyway.
Started on my cortina project after this. Will be using the Let in that at some point and possibly putting an xe on 45's in this. Anyway, cracking on with the splitty at the mo. I hope i can get another nova project in a few years..
sorry, didnt realise it was an old thread, the car came up in conversation on 'vauxsausage' on facebook (get yourself on there) Dayne was telling me about it, some very nice work there chap.
how did you get on with the rad in the boot? ive been thinking to do this for a long time but wasnt sure if it would work or not, how/where did you run the water pipes and did you put an aux pump in line somewhere? would be great if you could pm me a bit info about it and any pics you have saved.
cheers
