View Full Version : Differences between E16SE and C16SE?

I'm assuming the only difference was the cat (and management, to cope with a lambda sensor?)

Or am I assuming wrongly?

If anyone can tell me, that would be great :)

Fantastic, thanks.

Out of the 2, I take it the E is better for running carbs, as it's got a distributor?

You will need change the dizzy for a 1.4sr one anyway.
So both will run carbs.

but the e16se has a higher compresion ratio as standard so in theory has more power potential in standard form

Nah, c16 has higher CR, about 10:1, e16 9ish :1
And is a better engine imo, better management etc.

Of course that dont matter if switching to carbs tho.

Ok, next question then.

If I get an E16SE, can the compression be raised by fitting C16SE pistons, or is the increase made with the head?

(I can get an E16SE free, will be rebuilding, so could do the pistons easily enough during the rebuild)

there the same pistons IIRC

To raise CR on a e16se, just skim the head....

Excellent, thanks guys.

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions at some point though.

Woops. Burgo is right. Apologies, lol
Anyhow C16 makes more power even with a lower Cr :p

as if there was any doubt lol and you will probably fin the c16 only makes more power due to its mapping

It makes 100bhp even with a cat fitted.

as oppose to a E16's 100bhp with a cat fitted :thumb:

e16s didnt have a CAT

i would imagine the c16se has larger inlet valves just like the c14se has, this was to make up for the more restrictive cat (well it was on the c14se anyway)

the valves on the heads are the same as far as i remember. (ie gte/gsi/sri heads are the same bar skimming)

Its all abitrary anyway if hes swapping to carbs... jsut make sure the bottom end is in good nick and away you go.

I think mike meant without a cat.
GTE/GSi/SRi heads all share the same valves. Yep, that is the reason gm fitted a better head, because of the car reducing power.

The C16 has a much more sophisticated management/ign setup though. That is no doubt where the extra power comes from.

IIRC The gearbox that comes with the later C16 GSi Novas doesnt allow the clutch to be swapped in situ. Might be worth considering.
