hi, ive just fitted my engine back into the car after rebuilding it. it was a standerd sri but ive swopped all the injection system for some t40's. tried starting it today and it turns over but just pops. its got spark and ive checked the fuel and thats ok. the timing belts on correctly and the two marks on the distriber are lined up.the person i bought them of said he had it on a 1.6 8v before so i thought it should a least run even if its over fueling? any ideas on wat to do or check??? thanks.

Popping back through the carbs is down to over retarded ign timing or lean fuel mix.
Have you fitted a 14nv dizzy and coil.
Timing wont advance with sri dizzy fitted.
Firing order is 1342

Are you using a mechanical fuel pump?

Aye, i forgot mention that.
If you still have the sri fuel pump fitted feeding the carbs(with no pressure reg), you'll probably funked them.

i think the firing order is right but i'll check. ive got a facet pump with a pressure regulator, and its a dizzy off a 1.3 (with the vacum on the top?) it pops out of the exhaust mainly and a few flames out of the carbs lol

Do you know what chokes/jets they have fitted?

You might see the choke sizes if you can get your face right up to the carbs.lol

Have you tried swinging the dizzy while someone turns the key for you?
Go light on the throttle and it might just start, failing this, take them off have a stripdown and check, chokes/jets and float heights.

right, managed to get it started. took the spark plugs out and turned the crank till it hit top dead centre and number 1 sparked. then worked from there. managed to get it running, but it was a bit rough so turned the dizzy and got it running abit better, but its only running on 3 cylinders!! number 4 is down. checked for spark and thats there but dont know if fuels there??
