Is it just when cold? The carb could need a clean...If you can id take it off of the car, strip it and give it a thorough clean..failing that try putting some redex through it. At least then you'll know that thats not where the fault lies if it does'nt fix it:)

did it start as a 1.4? did you have the carb distributor of it for the vacuum advance?

Timing, fuel mixture need adjusting?
Could be the cam doesn't like running on a carb, had this problem myself in the past, fixed it with T40s

i've got the same, it was a 1.2 converted to a 1.4 injection running on carbs, i got the car and had to change the ignition module to the 1.4 one and also change the distributor as it wouldn't have electronic advance on it

Depends on the carb.

you will need to change the coil and distributer to that off a 1.2

What head is fitted?
The sri one?

If so that will be causing a turbulent inlet flow, probably explaining the dodgy running.

the sri head had the biggest inlet ports so mayb your getting to much of the good stuff in try adjusting the idle and get the timing set and mayb advance it a little

the 1.2/1.3 had the biggest inlet ports

if your running the 2e3 pierburg carb, the answer is easy, bin it! theyre w##k, and expensive to rebuild, get a downdraft weber, twin webers or tb's. simple really!

The mis-match of the inlet port shapes will be causing a lot of the problem. The fueling and timing most likely need adjusting too.
