Right mate, listen to this...

Around a year ago, i had a mate that owned a garage in an industrial estate near where i live. He needed a cheap car that he could pick up parts in etc for his garage...any way...he ended up getting a mk2 XR2 for ?400 in good nick for it's age, took out the back seat for space for parts and left everything else standard. Anyway...he's 25 and still has the boy racer spirit in him, so he wanted the car to be quicker than it was, so he fitted a mk2 fiesta 950 popular gearbox to it (dont know how much farting around he had to do to make it fit, but he did) and you would not believe how fast it is. I was once in the car when he beat a Escort RS Turbo at the lights...TRUE. Because the 950 gearbox has much lower gearing than the 1.6 box on a standard XR2, it went like fucking stink (b 4 u all start to say ?Blue Oval nob heads? or ?Fords are shite? etc I want to say it for you?FORDS ARE SHITE?.anyway?)

So the moral of the story is?even though this 950 gearbox only lasted a couple of months, and chopped about 15mph of the cars top speed, it made it so much quicker?so if I were you mate?I wouldn?t go up in gear box size, I?d go down if anything. (I know u cant cos you cant get a 3 geared gear box!!!!) Sure, the F10 1.3sr gear box would give you a higher top end speed, but I?m not sure about it giving you quicker acceleration?

Micky will know?.cos he?s a walking haynes manual!!!!!!

Hope this helped

Happy Motoring

yes i know!
if u stick the 5 speed in your car will be slower full stop

the engine wont have the power to pull through the gears

can u pull nearlly top revs in 4th gear?

if u cant its pointless giving yourself another gear

you only need the extra gear if your 1.2 engines is tuned up and can actually power right up to tthe boxs limits

my mate has a 1.4 astra and he actually dropped down to the 4 speed from the 5

his acellaration has improved no end but he struggles over 100mph

leave the box and change the engine

But wouldn't havin 5 gears mean the gears aren't as tall so it could pull easier, through the gears? i am planning 2 get a 1.4 engine 4 it anyway but this is ment 2 fill the gap till i get it!

what about the 5 speed box that comes with some 1.2's then, what would that do 4 my speed/acceleration?

what you want ideally is an f13cr box from a GTE/GSi or SRi, and a final drive/diff from a 1.3SR or a 1 litre, they both use a 4.18:1 ratio so you'll get loads of acceleration plus 5 gears but not as much top end!

Get the 1.3sr?s gearbox. It has the same overall ratio in 5th as the 4-speed has in 4th. So you get same top speed and better acceleration. You lose time by changing the one extra gear but you don?t need to wait until you engine will get to the power region.
When i hit limeter with 3rd gear driving my tuned 1.3 (standard 4-speed) and put in th 4th the rpm drop below 4000 so i have to wait until revcounter comes to the 4000 and driving continues :)
All i?m trying to say it?s that I need a 1.3sr?s gear box. I?m not sure if the situation with 1.2 is same.
