well about september my mate and myself hatched a plan of building what will essentialy be a brand new nova! first step was 2 find a project base!

After searching high and low around the country in mid november we finaly settled on a red g reg gte. The car its self apeared for sale on here and the next day we went to have a look!

2 and a half hours there 2 and a half hours back and we were the proud owners of an honest little near standard gte. The bonus was it was a bargin ?300.

Valve stem seals were well gone slight ring wear but other than that she was a little gem.

So it all began....

unfortunatly we lost most of the pics of it before we started and during the major parts removal!

well first job was 2 strip everything imaginable from it and get it in the air so thats what we did

interior striped and revealed previous welding no real nastys though apart from passenger floor

wings bumpers bonnet ect along with engine and most the major componants and parts removed

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/porter/gte/SV101328.jpg?t=1173146977

we got the car back at tea time on a friday and even though we still had 2 weeks worth of work 2 do before it went to be painted craig shared an interestin piece of infomation with me . At 10am saturday morning the car was booked in to get the inside primed and bay sprayed!

One large phone bill later and alot of beer tokens spent i managed to get 4 lads down to give me a hand!

hear is the car as we got it back

we had the bay arches inside and underbody sand blasted with second hand grit. At first i was a little unsure about having it done due to exspecting it to come back looking like a teabag but after we got the car back i wished we had had it done at the bigining and i would advise it to anyone going this far as most of the grotty bits we would never have found if we didnt have it done. Also for the sake of 80 quid which is all it cost the it saved us weeks of manual labour and a hell of alot of money when it went to paint in labour costs there aswell.

here you can see the welding that was done before it went and some pics of the stuff i did when it came back. Everything done in these pics was done in 12 hours (cheers for the help again to Dan Ingram, Rich Web, Ash Scace and Hennry) the pics dont cover everything we had to do and cant possibly show the chaos we was in!

interior sprayed with a special primer due to the texture left after the sand blasting bay was preped further to keiths standards primed sealed and painted in flame red and all for arches took 3 heavy coats of shoults(sp)

while the car was at keiths we had the rear axel, bottom arms, tie bars, tie rod brackets, hubs, engine mounts, and anything else we saw fit sand blasted ready to go be powder coated

also brought avo coilovas and a full set of polly bushes 2.0l brakes with drilled vented and grooved disks a new sill 2 brand new mk2 front wings and to new rear arches next up trial fit coilovas to the rear and check clearance!
ste porter
06-03-07, 11:40 AM
trial fitting of the coilovas they clear by about 4-5 ml so should get away with it seems as its on brand new pollys ect. note the axel has been hammerited in these pics! well craig decided that he would see how well they turn out with brush paint.:wtf: what a mess is all i could say so we ended up having it powder coated yet again lol

came with shed loads of recipts has done near on 80 000. had a courtney clutch late last year uprated actuator ect cam belt 2 weeks before it was removed with all asosiated bits ect. the guy also gave us the down pipe ecu good condition non butchered loom all boost and water pipes boost gauge and boost controler all in all its been a good weekend spent near on 1200 quid and were that little bit closer to collecting all the parts we currently need. first job to day strip the engine down check condition of the turbo thoroughly ect and start thinking about engine mods. pics of the engine strip down later today
ste porter
13-03-07, 08:36 PM
well started the strip down today and made some interesting discoverys(sp).
seams it has an uprated courteney actuator not a singal scratch or mark anywhere on any of the turbo wheels and very minimal play in the shaft with no signs of leaking oil seals which was a bonus. we belive the turbo to have not long been reconditioned but as soon as the engines in and running its going to be replaced with a hybrid spec one any way! also did a compresion test today all the cylinders varied ever so slightly by about 10 psi or so but im not concerened as they were all roughly 180 mark and the test was caried out with the engine cold and had not been run in 3 months so we will see once its running

we was originaly planning on completly rebuilding the motor with low comp pistons ect before fitting but on the time scale we have thats just not going to happen now instead its going to be tarted up fitted with all roose hoses ect and make it to pv and then straight after pv when we have ironed all the teeving problems out the shell its going to be removed completly striped and rebuilt again from the ground up ready for the summer show season
put the red plug cover on the black engine and itll look mean lol
nice work keep it coming :thumb:

Fantastic read! Lots of attention to detail & it looks like the blasting helped loads.

Chrome XE's & LETs always look good with Red, if not keep it satin Black to make the Red look really special. Black silicone hoses etc.

Really like it so far though.
Good luck getting to PV with it.

i think now this car amy be taken on a trailor to pv and put 2gether there

all parts will be collected and as much done as possible before the day then built up on the stand at pv so if anyone has a gazibo they would like to donate for pv weekend big enough 2 get a car in that would be great also anybody who fancys lending a hand in exchange for a drink that would be great i will keep you all updated as soon as we get better work will continue and dependent on what stage were at when were a week before pv we may be scrounging for spare hands specialist tools and equipment ect but this car WILL GO DOWN THE STRIP AT PV

ste porter
09-05-07, 11:01 PM
keeping the original mk1 switch and having it under the dash
it saves alot of choping to fit the mk2 conector block and mk1 ones dont brake!
turbo timer looks good there, shame you couldnt get one in black tho

Bad S*it mate -- Aslong as your OK

All that hard work up sh*t creak..
i know this isnt on your priorty list..
but the guiness world record is 6 rolls in a ford sierra as done on top gear.. so i think we have a new world record!!!
but a guiness independant ajudicator wasnt present, and you have do it the other way so wind speed doesnt affect your roll ;)
lol
really gutted ste, get some pics up asap

all i have to say is the cage and harnesses saved our lives theres no doubt about that what so ever and a word from the wise to anyone building a project check and double check absolutly everything before a test drive or this could be you
That's painful to look at!
looks soooo good in that top pic aswell, luckily you didnt have a poxy show cage
ste porter
22-05-07, 08:52 PM
as you can see in the 3rd pic although the roof looks untouched it isnt its actualy shaped around the cage pics dont show the full exstent of the damage it was holding 13psi of boost and over boosting at just over a bar!
ste porter
22-05-07, 08:53 PM

ste porter
22-05-07, 09:05 PM

ste porter
22-05-07, 09:06 PM
6 and a half grand pluss the car on top and a few other bits and pieces that i already had kicking around
and thats without a 6 month labour bill with about 2 months worth of all nighters spread over the entire period
ouch !! maybe you dont want to tell us but what exactly happened ??
ste porter
22-05-07, 09:25 PM
basicly we got it ready for its first test run checked everything ect and buggered off gave it some hammer down some straight back roads set the boosting up ect got it holding about 13psi hapily and over boosting at over a bar things were going realy well heading back about quater of a mile from home i opened it up abit coming out of a bend and it just didnt turn at all just went straight the steering wheel had come loose due to there beeing no spring or catch washere ect and basicly came of in my hand hit a curb slid along a dyke fliped about 15 20 feet in the air while roling violently came back down on the curb roled again 3 or 4 times and came to a stop in the midle of a field about 450 yards from where we left the road

Guys, i have been keeping an eye on what you have been doing to my old GTE and the workmanship has just been fantastic. it is such a shame about what has happened, but at least you are alive!
cars can be replaced, money can be made(borrowed from the bank helps!!) but loss of life can never be returned.

Strewth! Just found out what happened.

Take your time to gather yer thoughts chap. The shock will take a few days to come out of your system. I had a similar accident with fewer rolls & I didnt sleep for nearly a fortnight.
Dont make any brash decisions in the mean time & chill out & think about stuff other than cars etc. Rob Lee said the same when he stacked his SR up badly but in the end, chose to build another Nova to take up his time & help hiom get over it.

Best of luck with the recovery.
Bad luck mate, these things happen. Sorry to hear that.

Yeh Rob was saying the same thing as you, he now owns a c16xe on tb's.

Looking at this pic the large washer that shud sit between the bush and the nut is missing
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/porter/SV102817.jpg?t=1179862871
If thats the case are you sure that did not pull back though the tie bar mount and cause the crash?
novacabrio
24-05-07, 09:43 PM
Have to agree with Rick that looks to be the suspect to me? should be a big 3 inch washer on there
ste porter
24-05-07, 11:10 PM
note also that there is half the bush missing mate we hit the kirb at a fair rate square on it tore the bush in half and pulled through. the washer you are talking about is wedged in the tie bar mount in a cone shape

it also bent the bottom arm which had been strengthened with 3mm plate in half and pulled the mounting point nearly half a foot back under the sill

the drive shaft the long side is also bent at a 60-70 degree angle and they were brand new m tech motorsport conversion shafts!

thats just how hard we hit
 jesus boy you must of been doing some knots to pull that through like that...
Just looked at the pics, fook me
What a shame to see it like that :(
As already said, you probably wouldn't be here telling us what happened if cage/harnesses etc hadn't been fitted.
