At last, CP and I have finally cracked the riddle of the F10 and F13 gearboxes!

First thing to get straight, is ignore the Haynes manual on this one. The quoted ratio's and drives are wrong. We took an F10 and F13 to pieces and worked out the ratio's for each. The F10 box from the SR has a F13/5cr gear cluster which is very close, with a final drive of 3.94:1. The F13 box as fitted to the GTE and GSi is an F13/5W gear cluster which is rediculously wide, with a really close final drive of 4.18:1. This does not tie up with what is written in the Haynes. So I've now taken the best of both, and will see what difference that makes. I've only managed to test it in the wet so far, and I have to be careful even in 4th as I wheelspin on full throttle!

Hehe. We should have concentrated on fitting a propellor and a rudder for yesterdays road conditions!

i feel the need for a hybrid f13 to go on a 2.0 16v

16v Nova - Toolkit, Trouble, Points and great expence all come as standard :)

e reg shell almost gone!!

Well, can i just point out!!!! For some reason iv seen a few GTE's GSi's with the f13w box, however the 1 i got from just novas off a gte, and the 1 they reckoned was a standard box, is the f13cr box, and much lower ratios than the f13 box i had originally. Also, i think some f10's have different ratios. Im sure the newer (h-reg onwards) have lower ratios as they always seemd to change gear b4 me when i had my 1.3.
I think the 1st f10 is similar ratios to the f13w, and the newer is like the f13cr, which kinda makes sense!!
basically i think they used similar ratios, then swoped the ratios on both boxes at the same time, as 'not' indicated in the Haynes!!!!!
I could be totally wrong however!

I see where u are coming from. I changed a box for one of my mates, F13 for F13 and he said the ratios were different, but I didn't pay much attention. I'd like to know more though, as my box is out of an 89F GTE and CP's is a GSi one and we have the same ratios. The easy way to tell is the speed achieved in 4th. Is it 110ish b4 changing up, or 130ish with a weak 5th. Anyone else know what there 1600 does in each gear?

The 1st box i had ws f13. Could do top speed in 4th, but i put an f13 in mingles, i think his 4th tops out at 100mph!
My 1st sr would o max speed in 4th (115mph est)
My f15 box will do (approx 115) in 4th and jus keeps goin in 5th!

my F reg GTE does 110mph in 4th and 130mph in 5th before the rev limiter. I think it has the close ratio box, with the bigger flywheel. Nice for racing about with, but annoying on the motorway -feels like it needs another gear.

Had chance to try it out in the dry.
First point is that I'd forgotten how good 3rd to 4th to 5th was in the 1.4Sr.
2nd point is that with more power from a 1.6 its even better - vaux. got this sporty mod well right.
3rd point the car is faster. I used to get 110 locally -now I can get 115.
4th point. Even if the car wasn't that much faster is is sooo much nicer to drive and sounds the bollox too.
5th point. 1.6's with the F13/5W & 4.18:1 FD is a poor set up unless you are into motorway cruising.

No more on about gearboxes now - I promise:'>
