Got me GSi running yesterday and seems to running really lumpy, even when warmed up and given a good blast. Also there seems to be an oily type subsance comming up the breather that connects onto the pipe from the AFM.
My neighbour seems to think there is something wrong with the bottom end as there is also some smoke rising up from somewhere below where the manifold joins the downpipe (but it isnt leaking from the exhaust) and it smells strongly of burning oil.
Any ideas guys??

Bottom end it sounds like... rings probably.

seems consistant with what I've been told today. Wish I had rebuilt the bottom end when I was doing the hg. grrrrrrr

could well be, not really had chance to look though as its dark everyday I get home from work. Still doesn't explain the missfire.
Does moving the dizzy really make much difference on injected engines??
Moving the dizzy makes a big difference, dont believe all this(it does nothing, ecu controlled etc) The ecu only controls the ign advance, it can't control where the dizzy is physically bolted initially.
I had problems with my spi engine feeling v. flat, advanced the dizzy about 5mm, and it drove loads better.
It will be running on 3 (or 2!) cylinders, due to compression ring death...
Either do a compression test, or check all the plugs, I bet one (or more) will be covered in oil

sounds like the rings have gone on one of the pistons. if the engine has sat up for a while before fitting its probly semi seased and f***ed the rings when you have started it.

it had been sat for nearly 2 months probably without being cranked. looks like rings it could be then.
Can theses be changed from the bottom without taking the top end off?
Have to rip head off, undo pistons off crank and tap them out the bore upwards. Might be easier/cheaper just get another bottom end.
Do a compression test dry, then do another with a teaspoon of oil down the spark plug hole, that will pinpoint the rings.
