View Full Version : Indicators on digidash

From the guides I have seen the black/green and black/white wires are the left and right indicator lights and these need to be wired into the stalks rather than the loom. Problem is I have done this and they ain't working. I them to the black/green and black/white wires on the stalk, I assumed these were the indicators. I wired them together above the blue things on the wires which I assume are the repeators.
Confused? :-/ I am.
Anyone seen where I have gone wrong?

repeators? my wires just went straight to my loom. hmmmm, what did u do with the spare nova wire for both directions? have u tried/tested the bulbs??

bulbs are ok as least they were before I took the old dash out.
it does not work striaght through the loom either.

instead of wiring it to the indicator direction, i.e left/right, wire it up to another one like i dunno, choke, brake handle or something, to test the wires are ok and that the bulbs are too and that uv took the wries from the right place, could be a broken track on the back of the dash????

When i wired in my digi dash, the guide said i would have to run wires from my indicator storks, one for left, one for right. But when i come to wire it all, i found i had wires for both going into my clocks. So i just used the trusty testing light to find which for which side, and Robert's your dads brother!

I just swapped wire for wire.....i.e indicator wires from Nova loom straight to the Digi dash.....dead simple, and the indicator bulds work spot-on.
Right indicator is Black/Green on both Nova loom and from Astra plug.....just join together.
Left indicator is Black/White on both looms, so again, it's a simple case of join 'em together!

Well i assure you i had a black wire, with white and green stirpe, and on the nova dash there was ONE light for left AND right, so thats why you need to run two wires from the stalks, cos the other wire only shows both

mike...what Nova is your's MKI or MKII?
Mines a MKI (87 E-reg) and all I did was cut off the old Nova plug from the dash, and swap wires over....no need to touch the stalks at all.
My old SR dash only had ONE light for BOTH left AND right indicators, but now with the digi dash, it's got separate bulbs for left and right, and they work separately as they should.
From the Astra plug, there were separate wires for left and right, but there were also separate wires for left and right on the Nova dash....the difference was they went to the same bulb.....one bulb for both left and right! When wiring the Nova loom to the Astra dash, I just separated these Nova wires to go to the separate connections on the Astra plug, to work the separate left and right bulbs. The stalks didn't need to be touched at all!
Maybe it's different on different aged Novas though? I've not looked in the Haynes for different aged cars, but my dash came out of a D-plate nova, and that had the same loom as mine...i.e had the separate black/green and black/white wires
It should only take 10-20 mins to wire in the dash, it's that simple!

my car is a 1991 h reg mkII merit
i know for a fact there was one balc/white/green wire, BUT i cant swear there was another becvause to be honnest i didnt really notice.
I AM SURE THOUGH, if the is a black wire with both stripes its likely only to be a single bulb for left and right?
perhaps the car was manufactured when they were skimpin on extra wires here and there to keep costs down?
or even perhaps its cos its a base model (OR WAS :D) and a mark II, is there a single wire from the hazard switch??
go figure!
Rich, well have to work this out its brain taxing!! Meet u half way ;)

me niether Rich, but is does get worse.
I thought that I would replace the whole dash while I was at it as mine old one had a crack in it. I had everything connected up admiring my work (minus the indicator lights)
when I had the smart idea of trial fitting the dash on clock while on. Bottom line is something smoked, now all I am getting are the lights coming on very faint. Rich, Mike any idea on what I have done? I checked all wires and they are fine
DOH :-/

Smoke :O
Which lights are coming on faint...the warning lights, or the main dash (speedo, rev counter etc) If it's just the warning lights, you shouldn't have done anything too serious, but if the main display is not working, then it's not a good sign.
Smoke and electrics aren't a good mix.....that spells something seriously wrong I'm afraid to say!
Is there any obvious signs of damage to the circuit board inside the dash? I know you can't see much of it, but you can look in through the side gaps. If anything is burnt, then it's by by digi dash, and a new one is required!
An electronics engineer might be able to fit it, but it'd cost a fortune...you'll have to get a new one!
If you know enough about electronics, you might be able to spot a burnt out resistor or something, and be able to replace it, but I doubt it.....it's a very complicated bit of kit
Are you sure all the wires were ok, 'cos it sounds like you got a short somewhere....only thing really that would give you smoke.

faint. Rich, Mike any idea
we the dedicated engineers now then rich? ;)
erm, as rich says really, our workshops at work cud have a luk at it for you (repair pc hardware and boards)
when u say smoke, much??? i had a halogen bulb go in my light thing at home, that smoked a little (front glass seperated from the bulb! and gas caught fire inside and escaped! :o health and safety!!!)
one for the boys?

no obvious signs of damage to the circit board, I unscrewed the back and had a look inside. The all of the clocks are working just at half the light can see but very faint. It didn't seem like the smoke was coming from the clocks, my first reaction was that it was one of the wires, but there was a fair bit of smoke and there is no black spots anywhere. This really does have me confused, it is like there is a flat battery or and only half power getting through, but that wouldn't be it coz the battery is fine.
ps. u guys work in a PC Shop or do you do IT contracting? Do IT Recruitment meself you see.
