hi,

some mates of my housemate at uni, are building a redtop gravel rally nova. i've tried to explain, that it's going to struggle to go round corners etc. and their reply is that it's got an lsd...

what people's opinions on this?

obviusly track day redtop nova's are awesome with descent suspension and set up, but i'm stuggling to see it working on gravel.

Is it to actually compete or just for a bit of fun?

I think itd be outclassed as a 2.0 as you can get all sorts of RWD and 4Wd cars in the same class....

it is to compete...

obviously down here in swansea, you get all the looney's in the mk2 escorts showing everyone how it's done...

i know what your saying, for the category that they will be in, it'll be 4wd or rwd. but i'm just trying to comprehend the idea of a redtop nova for gravel rallying...

only way it would work is if it had calibra 4x4 running gear tbh i think there going to run streight into edge of 1st corner

IMO a 2.0 would be overkill for a gravel spec nova.

Personally id go for a 1600.

My G/F's dad had a 2.0 XE nova that he competed on gravel stages with, il ask him what it was like, competitiveness-wise

And why would that work? The transfer box would explode before the first stage finished.

lol

i think their going to be rebuilding the front end of the car instead with fwd

convert it to rwd :D loads of fun, or just change the suspension set up and do single venue events like pembrey and epynt

2.0L FWD if he does decide to do it he will be against type R civics and such.
Either RWD conversion(then against redtop MK2's) or go 1600. plus you gota look at the strain gravel rallying puts on suspension and shafts and the likes. Looking at alot of hardship from the 2.0l

Sorry but, as in a track day valver, if enough money is spent on the suspension setup then theres no reason why it wont be competituive. I can guarantee it'll be one of the lightest in its class, and understeer is easier to combat on gravel, that what the fecking hydro handbrake is for!!

Use a 1.6 and your up against others who have a lot more experience rallying Novas / corsas, and all the other cars which will be uber light in that class.

IMO, 2.0 isnt a bad idea, so long as he sorts the chassis properly!!

I agree with Bottlethroddy, why should'nt it work?, Astra's did ok in the forest.
I would be tempted to swivel the top of the engine backwards so that more weight is on the driveline, this could raise other issues though with fuelling, driveshafts.
Give it a go, let us know how you get on.
