Oil everywhere

Went to look at a nova GTE today that was taken off the road with a problem and never fixed.I could just get my head in the engine bay and there was oil everwhere.The bloke selling it said the car dropped a valve so he had it fixed without getting the head skimmed.The car was ok for a few weeks so he drove it 70 miles out of the area.As he was going on the A66 the oil light came on so he pulled up(car still ran)got car drop off back home.They took the head off and left it there for 2 years not really noing what went wrong.He said it was running abit rough before oil light came on.The car was not knocking or clattering when ticking over at the side off the road.Any idea's what might of gone wrong with what he has described.I am picking the car up next week so any idea's welcomed to help me fix it.

i heard of a volvo doing something similar, was a ecu problem in the end tho

could be loads of things , just drop another engine in you can get them for ?50

No engines were i live or ?50,no gte/gsi's and i want to fix it.
