ive got a 1.4 sr and its done a wopping 124,500 miles, it runs fine, but would benifit from a better carb and air filter (what car wouldnt?). is it worth getting the engine reconditioned or to buy a reconned engine? i think the headgasket has been leaking for a while, slowly.
how much would it cost each way? what benifits would i see? do you know a good place to get an engine tuned in hertfordshire?
if you have any answers, please let me know,
cheers

Where are u in Herts?

Its gonna cost about ?500 to re-con your engine assuming you do the work. Not sure how much a re-con engine would cost, but I would think it will be more. You could always find a low mileage engine with history which should cost between ?150 and ?300 for a 1.4.

i phoned a place in sheffield and asked that very question...
They said it would be 500 to 700 quid... The boss was out so they weren't exactly sure...

Thats not so bad really...
Not cheap but its not bad.

You would have to strip the engine to pieces, have the cylinders bored and fit new pistons and rings, have the crank re-ground and fit new shells, fit replacement gaskets and seals, including valve stem seals and possibly have new guides pressed in. It is alot of work that needs to be done thouroughly and cleanly with the proper equiptment.

I live in Ware, and My siste lives in Potters Bar, near The Chequers.

I would say pickup another lump! U could probably pick up a decent 1.4 engine for about ?200-300. Colin smith was selling a 1.4 16v not long ago for ?350!

I did similar. I stripped the block and got a machining company to do the bores and crank, but I reassembled everything myself (with CP`s help). The new oversized pistons, rings, shells, machining, etc cost 315+ VAT.

yes and no.
You should do, but so long as the eng. block no. remains the same as would be the case for a rebore, they ain't never gonna know.
