At the PNG meeting on sunday I was talking to Nick Caro about my new engine and he mentioned something about coscast?? engines and how to identify if it is one or not. He said something about the top being silver with a red cover mad of metal with Vauxhall dohc16v on it, but he also mentioned something else, but I can't remember what it was!! Does anyone else know how to tell if an engine is the coscast one or not?? also why are these better??
cheers

The Coscast is the early 16v engine that had the help of Cosworth in its design. Its a much better head giving an extra 22bhp over the Ecotec version. I think they are pre 1994 and like you said, they have a red plug/lead cover down the centre.

coscast heads were fitted to e/f reg astras
later engines had the same head but made by vauxhall the way to tell the difference is a step by the water pipe hole on the side of the head cause vaux heads don't have it
engine types:
2.0 16v coscast 156bhp

The spec on the cav says 156 bhp, 0-60 in 7.9 secs, then when they fitted the beasts with a cat converter it dropped to 150bhp and 0-60 in 8.5secs. Thats where my confusion lies. You is probably right.

Mine has the same SFI box as the coscast one and has the right colours etc.
I haven't checked the step yet, but I'll have a look.

Basically the coscast head is the properly made one, if you source you engine from an Astra GTE 16v you won`t go wrong. Vauxhall deided to try and save money by making them themselves, the heads are less dense (cheap sh1t!) and quite a few turned porous (you need a new head if this happens!) Have the cosworth ones got `cos` stamped somewhere?
