i found this thread and ive got a few questions.
http://www.novaload.net/forum/showthread.php?t=74310
ive got a 316 deg cam, vernia, and a orted and polished 1.48v mpi head.
i was wondering if the 1.4 16v bottom end is stronger than the 8v
also, would it take the head and cam ive got without any mods like arp conrod bolts.
and are the water pumps and crank pullys the same?
:thumb:
iv also been wondering this when i saw that thread, iv got a similar spec top end (head etc) so id like to know for a future rebuild lol (not hijacking)
I'd just fit a 8v bottom end tbh.
Not worth the hassel of having to find one etc etc.
16v pistons are lighter and stronger iirc, but theres not a huge difference.
man of knowledge again lol
what about the 1600 16v bottom end. is it actually worth that, as i was thinking 1600 when i want a rebuild
Rallyman is using a 16v bottom end iirc
on his grp A type 1600 8v.
Dont think theres much gain in a std 16v bottom end tho, unless you get it modded to run high CR etc.

so a 16v bottom end is stronger and could deal with more power?
im just wondering to try and save me some cash. save rebuilding the 8v bottom end with arp's and new rings etc.
would the mounts be the same?
Mounts are same.
Why, how much power are you planning on running? Lol
The 8v block copes fine with 150bhp Na, and 160+ Turbo power.

cool, i heard that the cam i have etc coupld put too much stress on the bottom end causing a rod to go through the block.
itl probably be around 100- 110 bhp at a guess hopefuly. and will also be taking a lot of stress when rallying.
so i could jut buy a standard 1400 bottom end and it will be ok?
the main reason for running the 16V bottom end is in rallying circles you sometimes have to keep std bore, and finding a non shagged 8v bottom end is nearly impossible

ah you learn something new every day! :thumb:

sound, would it be worth putting new piston rings, arp's or would a good condition botom end be fine?
I would check the crank journals for wear etc.
Also whilst there you should replace the big/main end shells, fit arp rod bolts if you plan on revving high.
Have the block honed, and new piston rings fitted.
New oil/water pump...
Might also be worth re-lapping the valves in too.
Up to you really, if you find a good condition bottom end you could just run that...
